The Horn of Plenty hotel

Gulworthy, Tavistock, Devon, PL19 8JD

This 4 Star Country House with 2 AA rosettes has been thrilling guests for almost 50 years with some of the very best food, views and accommodation you'll find in the South West. Awarded Silver 'Small Hotel of the Year' in the Visit England Awards for Excellence 2015/16.

Located on the Cornwall/Devon border, and within easy access of Plymouth, Exeter and Dartmoor, this stunning, privately owned hotel sits within five acres of gardens and is surrounded by gloriously peaceful countryside.

The hotel offers 16 luxury en suite bedrooms (6 of which were new in 2014). The majority of rooms have a balcony from which to enjoy uninterrupted views of the Tamar Valley, the Victorian Walled Garden or the lovely Devon countryside.

There is ample outside seating with which to enjoy a well earned gin and tonic as you watch the sun go down on the valley. Inside you are invited to relax and enjoy the warm, friendly atmosphere. A wealth of fresh flowers adorn all public rooms and in winter, crackling log fires add to the warmth.

The heart of The Horn of Plenty is the kitchen, where Head Chef Ashley Wright cooks up a storm. Taste, texture and final presentation are as important as fresh, local produce and top quality ingredients. Currently over 70% of our produce is sourced within Devon, and 90% from the South West.

The Horn of Plenty also has a Wedding Venue and Restaurant:

Review of The Horn of Plenty

I booked a night away with my husband after friends recommended this hotel.

It was amazing. Beautiful scenery, views for miles. Very peaceful, just what we needed.

Our room was the Best Room in the coach house, and it was the best! Very clean, the bed was large and the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in! The bathroom was amazing and modern.

All staff were very friendly, a big thank you to the receptionist who greeted us (sorry I don't know your name, young with dark hair). You were so friendly and walked us to our room. 5 star welcome!

We will visit again!

We stayed for four nights and enjoyed every moment.

This small hotel is situated overlooking the Tamar valley with fine views from the front part of the dining room. We requested a superior room with a beautiful view but the one allotted to us although large and splendid with an enormous bathroom, lacked one. So we opted to swap to a smaller room (No 10) that had a great view over the rolling Devon countryside. It was compact but well fitted out and even had a tiny balcony just enough for two.

We liked the pre-dinner drinks in the comfortable lounge in the main house (hotel is separate from bedrooms, although there are rooms in the main house) and being able to choose from the menu before going through to the dining room.

The food is high quality (home baked bread, local produce) and the menu imaginative. Breakfast was chosen from a very comprehensive menu.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming.
There are lots of National Trust places to visit nearby.

This hotel was a real treat. The staff were lovely and we felt like valued customers from the moment we booked and throughout our stay.

We upgraded our room and had a huge balcony with stunning views across the valley.

The food in the evening was wonderful and breakfast was equally good with the added extra of a glass of prosecco or Buck's Fizz. We left feeling relaxed and regenerated.

Hope to stay again.

A wonderful hotel in a magnificent setting. Beautiful room with large balcony
overlooking the Tamar Valley. Very friendly and helpful staff. Superb dinner
and breakfast. Certainly one of the best hotels I have enjoyed in my 59 years
as a Travel Agent. Can't wait to return.

What a beautiful hotel! Absolutely loved staying here, great location, views, staff, food and bedrooms.
Very peaceful area overlooking the Tamar Valley and on a clear day you can see as far as Bodmin Moor.
All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful.
We stayed in The Coach House right next to the hotel. Very modern, clean and inviting. Our room was situated on the top floor overlooking the courtyard.
Decent sized bathroom with walk in monsoon shower and large freestanding bath.
Amazing food, beautifully presented and so much to choose, all locally sourced and fresh.
Great full English Breakfast cooked to order, plus buffet style options also available.
Would certainly love to go back and visit again, especially for the Afternoon Tea!

A beautiful venue, the accommodation was modern and spotlessly clean, the food was first class and the staff were welcoming and attentive and I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wanted somewhere for a special occasion.

If there is a better word than excellent then I would use it !!
We spent 3 days celebrating our *****th. wedding anniversary and our room we could not fault and we can recommend "splashing out" on room 11 !!!
The complete experience was exceptional with not just the weather which we had ordered ( no extra cost ) but the comfort, food and staff were all perfect.
I think there are many other hotels whose owners or managers should stay here just to see what good service is all about.

Had a lovely family weekend to celebrate my husband's 70th birthday, with our daughters, their significant others and our gorgeous grandson. Have not been for 4 years and had a fabulous time, the place is amazing the views are wonderful and the staff are absolutely the best, friendly, helpful and great fun. We will try not to leave it for 4 years till our next visit.

The best hotel in the South West! The owners are lovely and the food is always exceptional. We got married here in 2012 and love to return to stay whenever we can. The new rooms are delightful and the relaxed and professional approach makes it a joy to stay here - can't recommend this hotel highly enough!
