Discover a quintessential English Country Estate

Often referred to as the perfect country house, Belton House in Lincolnshire provides plenty to keep stately home lovers happy for the day. Wander the truly lovely deer park and gorgeous gardens whatever the weather (wintry walks and summer strolls are equally lovely) then take a guided tour of the below stairs area where you can learn all about the lives of the Belton servants through the centuries. Belton is perhaps most famous as the home of Lord Brownlow who was instrumental in the love affair that scandalised the world – that of Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson. Edward was the godfather of Lord Brownlow’s son and Brownlow offered a safe haven for the hated Mrs Simpson after Edward became king at Belton. The royal pair had stayed there on occasions and guides in the house show where they slept and were entertained – fascinating stuff. As for the gardens, they are composed with great harmony and proportion - there is a wonderful order and strong architectural conviction. With both formal Italian and Dutch gardens as well as a vast informal area, the gardens also offer variety and choice. The 1870s Dutch garden is one of green and golden yew, formal beds edged with lavender and generously filled urns, whilst the earlier sunken Italian garden is more reliant on architectural features to make its statement.

Belton House also has a Historic House:
