I went here on a rare kid-free evening with my wife. We went straight from work, so early evening but even then there was a decent enough hubbub about the place

We went there on the reputation of its steaks, and were not disappointed. Before you order a meat platter is presented to you, showing the array of cuts and meats on offer, including specials such as kangaroo. This is a good start, as you get to see the size of the porterhouse and tomahawk steaks!

We both went for a sirloin, mine with a cajun rub and hers with a simple salt and pepper rub - we both declined any sauces. These are cooked to your liking over an open fire in the restaurant itself. I asked for medium and got a perfectly-cooked, succulent, tender steak with just enough rub to be noticed but not to overpower the steak. My wife was similarly impressed with her medium-rare.

After that outstanding steak, if I'm honest the sticky toffee pudding that followed was merely excellent.

The decor of the restaurant is a sort of contemporary rustic charm, with some rather interesting feature chairs around larger tales.

Parking is best done at the large municipal car park just next door, which is free after 18:00 and offers a lovely view of the Lamborghini, Bentley and Aston Martin showrooms opposite!

We have just returned home from what we can say was an excellent meal. The steak was cooked to perfection by a very friendly female chef. We had a really good waitress and considering it was only her third shift, she did a great job, we be back very soon!

Had a wonderful time at the Elephant, I met one of the Chefs called Claudio from Romania. I was so impressed by the quality of food and service, I recommended this restaurant to my friends and family. Since then my daughters best friend celebrated her Grandmother's birthday there. Excellent! Thank you Claudio for such a wonderful meal. :)

We had a lovely meal at The Elephant, Pangbourne just before Christmas. There is parking at the site and nearby. I use a wheelchair and there is excellent wheelchair access to the restaurant. There is very attractive Indian decor and I liked the atmosphere of the place immediately. The menu is very varied. The wine menu was very difficult to read as the writing was very small. The room is quite dimly lit. The service was charming. Sharing platter looked very good. Husband and I had crab and lobster cake. For mains the lamb fillet was pronounced excellent and the half lobster looked good, but a finger bowl was really needed. I chose risotto which is always my favourite. The dessert was a baked cheesecake (a particular favourite of mine) everyone wanted a taste though!!!!!

We have now been twice and are too worried to tell anyone else about it in case we can't get a table! The steaks were cooked to perfection - four of us had our steaks cooked to different levels and all arrived on the table at the same time and were perfectly cooked to each individuals taste. Staff efficient and attentive - the evening couldn't have been better.

We also ate in the Herd restaurant. Great concept of cooking the steaks in the old fire place in front of you. Great food theatre. Food was beautifully presented and the waiting staff were very knowledgable and pleasant. Restaurant was full and had a good atmosphere. Also went to the bar for a couple of Gins and again staff were working hard and engaging with customers.

Best steak ever cooked over wood BBQ, rosemary and garlic rub, very tender and tasty, not had one as good as this for a long time, was here a few months ago and still the best. Beer also exceptional and service fantastic, chef and waiters very keen and friendly.

6 of us had a good meal here yesterday. The Herd is the new restaurant in The Elephant, and it has improved a lot in recent weeks. All of us were happy with our tender and tasty steaks. The service was efficient, and the place was quite busy. Its great at last to have a decent restaurant in Pangbourne, and we will be returning soon.

Well I had steak at the Herd and all I can say is my god was it a steak and a half me and some associates stayed at the Elephant on business so ate here we had a couple of steaks to share they were massive and the meat had amazing flavour from the wood fire I must say I'd truly recommend the Tomahawk it was amazing!! but you will need people to share it with so take some friends/ family along or make it as business trip like I did and enjoy it! Would recommend to friends and family and if I venture this way again on business or otherwise I will be back.

I took my daughter here for dinner on Monday night. Although we were the only diners, she is 9 so we went early, the place is great. Service was good and the steaks were fabulous. They made a real effort for us and we watched them cook our steak on the wood fire. Very cool

This restaurant opened recently and on entering the hotel you can't help but notice the smell of food cooking on an open fire. The waiting staff are attentive and it is good to see the board of steaks in advance of making your choice. The chef cooks on an open fire in the restaurant which is lovely to see but can get a little smoky if the restaurant is busy. We were fortunate to sit by a window which was handy when needing a bit of fresh air. The food was amazing, beautifully presented and the taste and texture of everything couldn't be faulted. I doubt there is anything equivalent nearby and we would definitely come back. Parking is limited but there is a public car park close by. Thanks to everyone for a lovely evening.
