Gordon Ramsay no less is a fan of this fine dining restaurant in Edinburgh’s trendy docklands area. The recently refurbished dining room is a quiet riot in shades of brown and cream making it one of Scotland’s chicest addresses. The eponymous Mr Wishart's cooking is as accomplished and ambitious as you might expect from someone who has trained with some of Europe’s best chefs. Precise modern French dishes lean towards classic combinations such as braised shin and short rib of beef with veal sweetbreads and mushroom ravioli although more adventurous diners might opt for poached pigeon with squid risotto and oyster rissole. Vegetarians are catered for with a separate a la carte menu and a tasting menu also available on request.

Top 10 Edinburgh Restaurants by Dinah Hatch

"Fans of elegant French cooking can call off the search. This superchef’s imaginative, seasonal dishes have been wooing diners in the city ever since 2001 when a Michelin star was awarded for the first time in Edinburgh. Wishart devotees flock to 54 Shore in Leith to savour detailed, exquisite dishes delivering delicate flavours. Wine buffs also make a beeline here, with a list that starts at an OK £26 and soars to premium £1k plus vintages. Try the six course tasting menu for £85 if you are feeling flush (Peterhead mackeral, Loch Fyne Crab Rose Marie, Shetland monkfish, roast breast of Goosenargh duck, raspberry pistachio lychee sorbet Sichuan pepper curd, Valrhona Guanaja chocolate mousse) or nip in for a three-course £32 lunch."

10 Best Whisky Experiences in Edinburgh by Adrian Mourby

"While England has been going through its “Ginaissance”, Scotland has seen its national drink –unfashionable as late as the 1980s - reach stratospheric levels of desirability around the world. Wealthy people want to own bottles that retail in four figure sums. Wealthy companies want to own whole distilleries.

Edinburgh doesn’t have any distilleries within the city, but it is full of people who want to experience Scots whisky. Walk down the Royal Mile and you are assailed by shops selling whisky, tartan and cashmere. There is a subtle preponderance of certain retail companies who give their outlets different names but sell all the same whiskies at all the same prices.

So how to get an authentic experience of whisky while visiting in the Scottish capital? Here are ten places worth visiting where you are guaranteed to learn and enjoy – and not get ripped off in the process."
