TEN B&B'S AND BOLTHOLES FOR GETAWAYS WITH GRANDPARENTS

Back to Inspirations
Family holidays mean excitement, adventure, exploring new places and – above all – having fun. A modern family holiday doesn't simply mean mum, dad and kids. According to the latest industry research, the current trend is multi-generational holidays in which parents are joined by one or both sets of their own parents. Taking a holiday with your extended family can be lively and means that youngsters get to spend time entertaining (and being entertained by) granny and grandpa – it can also be a way to share mundane aspects of a vacation such as travel costs, cooking or babysitting. I've picked ten boutique B&Bs and self-catering properties that are luxurious, comfortable and well suited for large family groups: some properties can be rented exclusively, others have few or no stairs, some will allow your pet dog to stay too. All the properties I've selected are within easy reach of fun things to see and do. All that'll be left to is decide what sort of break will suit your brood – mountain biking in Scotland, seal spotting in Pembrokeshire, exploring a castle in Kent or something more sedate such as tucking into a cream tea in the West Country?
Clayton Wickham Farmhouse

West Sussex is a quintessentially English county with thatched cottages, pretty winding lanes and historic towns such as Arundel and Chichester, though children prefer running across the rolling open spaces of the South Downs or along its beaches. Clayton Wickham Farmhouse dates to the 14th century and still has original oak beam ceilings and inglenook fireplaces. There are six bedrooms so it's spacious enough for a group travelling together. Arundel Castle and the seaside town of Brighton, with its pebble beach, pier and traditional fish and chip shops, make for entertaining day trips but it's just as easy to relax on the farm in the three-acre garden, which has a tennis court and croquet lawn.

Dairy Barns

There are nine country cottage-style B&B rooms (some of which can be joined to make family suites) and two self-catering cottages at Dairy Barns, the Deane family's working farm. Sumptuous breakfasts include locally made sausages and tasty home-made waffles; to walk it off afterwards you are welcome to explore the farm tracks to see the lambs (in spring) or watch haymaking (in summer), and meet the resident dogs, cats, horses and ponies. Fun family-friendly days out that you can do together including the hop-on, hop-off Poppy Line steam railway, boating on the Broads or building sandcastles on the expansive beaches.
