The Lancashire town of Clayton-le-Moors is locally known as Clayton. It was developed around the Leeds-Liverpool canal which runs through it. One of the attractions in the town is Mercer park in the grounds of Mercer House, where John Mercer lived and who invented a process for treating cotton and was also a pioneer in colour photography. There are many pubs in the town and several hotels including a 700 year old manor house.
