Overview

Surrounded by open countryside and gentle views, The Old Millhouse is a place where you can slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of rural living, without giving up comfort or style.

Inside, the house retains its heritage roots with original features such as exposed beams and traditional stonework, which lend warmth and character, while thoughtful updates bring a fresh, relaxed feel. The balance feels natural, creating a space where you can truly switch off, take your chose off and feel at home.

The living areas are generous and welcoming, perfect for long conversations, quiet reading, or evenings spent with friends. The kitchen is fully equipped, so you can cook at your own pace, whether that’s a hearty breakfast before a day out or a relaxed supper with local ingredients.

The gardens provide space to breathe, with spots to sit, dine, or simply take in the surroundings. It’s easy to lose track of time here, whether you’re enjoying a morning coffee in the fresh air or watching the light change across the landscape in the evening.

From your doorstep, you can explore nearby villages, scenic walks, and the wider countryside, then return to your own peaceful haven at the end of the day.

Britain's Finest in conversation with The Old Millhouse

What do you think makes a stay at The Old Millhouse unique?

The Old Millhouse is one of Scotland's most quietly extraordinary private retreats — a 1703 stone mill rescued from ruin and meticulously restored into a five-star exclusive-use property just 20 minutes from Edinburgh. Set on 3.5 private acres along the River South Esk, it sleeps up to 12 across the main house and a riverside apartment, with a hydrotherapy swim spa, Scandinavian sauna, and cold plunge pool on site. East Coast golf is on the doorstep — Muirfield, North Berwick, and Gullane all within easy reach — while Edinburgh's restaurants, culture, and history are a short drive away. What truly sets it apart is Sally herself — a host with over 30 years of international hospitality experience who lives on the property and is included in every stay, bringing the warmth and knowledge of a private household rather than the anonymity of a rental.

Can you suggest any activities or things to do while staying in the Dalkeith Edinburgh area?

Right on the doorstep

Dalkeith Country Park — practically next door and excellent for all ages. Go Ape's treetop adventure spans eight ziplines across the River Esk, with three courses for different thrill levels, while Fort Douglas adventure playground is popular with families. The Restoration Yard in the beautifully converted 18th century stables has an award-winning restaurant, deli, coffee bar and wellness studio.

Rosslyn Chapel — just a short drive away. The intricately carved 15th century chapel, featured in The Da Vinci Code, is one of the most visited historic sites in the region.

Newbattle Abbey — a lovely walk or cycle from the property, set along the River South Esk.

Edinburgh (20 minutes)

Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile with its many Experiences

Palace of Holyroodhouse

Arthur's Seat — the ancient volcano dominating Holyrood Park, rewarding climbers with views across the city and the Firth of Forth

The Scott Monument and Princes Street gardens

Portobello Beach — a surprisingly lovely seaside stretch on the city's eastern edge

World-class restaurants, galleries and theatres

Golf

Muirfield, North Berwick, Gullane, and Musselburgh (the world's oldest golf course) all within easy reach on the East Lothian coast.

Whisky & distilleries — several accessible day trips, including the Scotch Whisky Experience in Edinburgh and distillery tours further afield.

Where can guests enjoy food and drink?

The Paper Mill in Lasswade is an all-day bar and restaurant set in a former paper mill overlooking the River Esk, with a spacious outdoor terrace running down to the riverbank — lovely in summer. The Kitchen at the Restoration Yard in Dalkeith Country Park is a popular award-winning option for lunch, set within beautifully converted 18th century stables.

For evening dining, Il Cavaliere is a much-loved Italian restaurant with a strong reputation for authentic cooking and a warm atmosphere, while Itihaas on Eskbank Road is a prize-winning Indian restaurant with a big local following — both firm favourites with guests.

Luci's in Dalkeith offers Italian dining with a cocktail bar, well reviewed for relaxed evening meals.

Edinburgh (20 minutes)

The capital offers everything from Michelin-starred restaurants to excellent casual dining, craft cocktail bars, and a thriving food market scene. Sally is happy to recommend and book restaurants to suit your group's tastes and occasion.
