Overview

Lowe's Mill Cottages at Torr Vale Mill

If your sense of history is as great as your sense of adventure you are going to love Lowe's Mill Cottages at Torr Vale Mill. The properties are set in New Mills, Derbyshire just on the border of Cheshire and Greater Manchester.

The five cottages have been meticulously converted from outbuildings of the Grade II* listed Torr Vale Mill which was England’s longest continuous working mill between 1785 and 2000. The mill sits in a deep valley on the banks of the River Goyt where a mighty weir was built as a source of power.

The cottages are individual and eclectic and retain many clues to their heritage, although they have been refurbished to be very comfortable with tasteful furnishings and modern kitchens and bathrooms.

What makes a stay at The Managers Suite unique?

This historic cottage was where over the centuries, the managers would sit whilst the workers would report to clock into work downstairs in The Clocking In House. This is a beautifully renovated one bedroom cottage with modern amenities, a good size kitchen and open plan dining and lounge area to relax in. The large windows in all the rooms of the Managers Suite provide a light and airy space from which you can admire the main mill, the iconic chimney and even see over to the river. The kitchen is fully equipped and in the lounge you will find a TV and books to use at your leisure. Following a day roaming around the local area, you can soak in the bath or under the shower provided in a very spacious bathroom prior to relaxing on the outside seating admiring the views from a designated raised area. The bedroom has a super king bed which can be split into two singles on request. Every property has wi-fi included and storage for your belongings.

What is the capacity for The Managers Suite?

The Managers Suite has one superking bedroom which can be split into twin beds.

What can guests enjoy when staying in the High Peak area?

Step out from any of the cottages and there’s a very short walk past the mighty chimney stack down to Torr Gorge where you can join the award-winning Millennium Walkway and marvel at the beauty of Mother Nature claiming back the river. If you can tear yourself away from this awe inspiring place, you might be surprised to find that you are actually in the centre of New Mills with a wide selection of eateries, pubs and shops.

New Mills is a small town situated on the borders of North West Derbyshire and Cheshire, forming part of the Derbyshire Peak District. Dating back to the 13th century, the late 20th century saw the Torrs Riverside Park (‘the park under the town’) come into being a place for recreation and relaxation, along with the New Mills Heritage Centre, opened to promote tourism in the area. The Torrs Millennium Walkway, a much-admired bridge, is set deep in the gorge and attracts many visitors, while Chapel en le Frith, the Capital of the Peaks, is only 5 miles away, boasting a cobbled market place and historic old stocks. Within easy driving distance is the delightful spa town of Buxton, famous not only for its therapeutic spring water, but also for its Pavillion Gardens and splendid Victorian Opera House, which boasts a variety of shows, attracting people from all over the world. Within easy driving distance are the Blue John show caves at Castleton and many stately homes such as Chatsworth House and Lyme Hall.

The cottages are perfectly located to make the most of the plentiful attractions of the Peak District National Park, and with the Manchester to Sheffield railway line running through the village, these buzzing cities are easily accessible without having to worry about parking the car.  There's plenty of activities locally including many walks, cycling, rock climbing, mutiple National Trust properties within a short drive, caves, historic landmarks, gin and brewery tours and parks and local areas of beauty.

These unique cottages can offer groups and families of all ages a memorable and fascinating holiday at any time of year.

Where can guests enjoy food and drink?

New Mills is a hub of cafes and restaurants with more being added all the time!  Within Torr Vale Mill is The Cheese Wheel - a craft beer and cheese shop, and The Shrub Club - a restuarant bar overlooking the River Goyt.  Within New Mills just a 5 minute walk from the cottages there are restaurants serving chinese, italian, fish and chips, indian, takeaway is also an option and includes pizza and fastfood.  There are numerous cafes open during the daytime and pubs and bars to sample local beer.
