Overview

Come and stay in Bishop Auckland and explore The Auckland Project. Choose from a collection of individually designed, dog-friendly and child-friendly, self-catering cottages, houses, and apartments recently renovated in the heart of the conservation area.

The Auckland Project is a multi-faceted regeneration initiative based in Bishop Auckland, County Durham. It combines art, heritage, faith, and community to revitalise the town and attract cultural tourism to the North East of England. At its heart is Auckland Palace, once the private palace of the Prince Bishops of Durham, which has been meticulously restored and reopened to the public.

The project also includes:

The Spanish Gallery, the UK’s first gallery dedicated to the art, history, and culture of Spain's Golden Age.

The Mining Art Gallery, exploring the region’s coal mining history through original artworks.

The Faith Museum, a new museum exploring 6,000 years of faith in Britain.

The Auckland Tower, offering panoramic views across the town.

Beautiful gardens and parkland surrounding the castle.

Founded by financier and philanthropist Jonathan Ruffer, The Auckland Project is not just a tourist attraction but a social enterprise, creating jobs, boosting education, and investing in the future of the town. It’s a powerful example of culture-led regeneration that blends history with community transformation.
