The Scarlet is a boutique eco-hotel pitched as an ‘escape for grown-ups to eat, dream and play in peace'. So it's no surprise to find that its restaurant is a chic, sophisticated affair. Immaculate white table clothes and dark wood flooring are offset by quirky interior features, such as fabric lampshades and intricately designed chairs. The cooking is equally modish, following locally sourced and foraged fashions. Slow braised pork set in its own jelly with marinated oyster, chestnut and girolle mushrooms stands out among the starters, as does the John Dory with crushed Cornish ‘earlies', wild garlic, cockle and parsley sauce to follow. Huge floor to ceiling windows with sea views provide a suitably escapist back drop.
