Overview

One of the most important museums outside London, the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle contains the greatest collection of European fine art and decorative arts in the north of England. The collections are displayed over three floors of this French-styled building. Look out for the excellent fashion and textiles gallery for its amazing costume displays including the wardrobe of Empress Eugenie (wife of Napoleon III). Highlights of the gallery include The Tears of St Peter by El Greco, Prison Scene by Goya, Trevisani's Portrait of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, Fruit and Flowers by Fantin Latour and Gruber stained glass panels in triptych.

A perfect visit. The combination of the literally stunning architecture, eccentric collection and fantastic restaurant had something for all the family. A real find of a quality that surpasses everything in the North and more than equals many London museums. It is perfectly formed - big enough to be engaging but small enough to get round in a reasonable amount of time. Built by a couple whose lives and loves are intriguing too. Good exhibition programme so it changes regularly enough too.

Informative, well set out, good Cafe/shop facilities, good disabled facility. Entrance price reasonable, helpful staff, good parking. It has it all for a day out including pleasant walks.

A first class gallery and museum in an extraordinary building - contributing much to the history of County Durham and the North East - doing a great educational job.

Lovely galleries displaying the fine porcelain, furniture, paintings and textiles. A delightful afternoon for the family. Tea room is lovely too!

The 2 headed calf blew my mind, I guess it would take something twice as good to blow the calfs mind, as he has 2 minds, if you know what I mean
