Overview

Once a bustling centre for coal mining and manufacturing, Bishop Auckland is now undergoing a remarkable transformation into a vibrant destination that attracts visitors with its heritage and charm. At the heart of this transformation is The Auckland Project, an ambitious regeneration initiative designed to breathe new life into the area. In addition to the castle, the project has introduced the Faith Museum, the first of its kind in the UK, a unique museum exploring 6,000 years of British history through the lens of faith, highlighting the area's rich religious heritage. The Faith Museum is located within the historic Grade 1-listed Scotland Wing of Auckland Palace, featuring a custom-built extension designed by Niall McLaughlin Architects. This contemporary addition draws inspiration from the form of a medieval tithe barn, creating a unique blend of historical significance and modern design. Explore a rich tapestry of faith and heritage in this remarkable setting.

Britain's Finest in conversation with Faith Museum

Where is Faith Museum located?

The Auckland Project's Faith Museum is the first of its kind in the UK, and highlights the area’s rich religious heritage. The newly developed Auckland Tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The initiative also aims to enhance public spaces, improve infrastructure, and promote local businesses, fostering community and pride among residents.

What is the history of Faith Museum to the present day?

The Faith Museum, created by The Auckland Project, is a thought-provoking exploration of how faith has shaped Britain over 6,000 years. Housed within the historic walls of Auckland Castle, the museum weaves together personal stories, rare artefacts, and immersive exhibitions to examine belief in all its forms—from prehistoric rituals to modern expressions of faith. As the first museum in the UK dedicated to this vast and complex subject, it offers a deep and reflective journey through history, inviting visitors to consider the role of faith in shaping communities, culture, and identity.
