Immerse yourself in 19th and 20th century northern life in the fabulous Beamish, The North of England Open Air Museum, in County Durham. This giant site (easily navigable by trams, charabancs and omnibuses) is dedicated to showcasing how people lived and is full of colourful characters that add to the experience. Highlights include the old fashioned sweetshop, the steam gala days held at the museum regularly, lambing season at the farm and the excellent old pub (which can get extremely busy in holiday periods). This is a great resource for children learning about this period in history, there's plenty of space for younger ones to run around and it is dog-friendly too.
