The hotel itself has a relaxed but stylish feel, with bedrooms designed to make the most of the outlook and far reaching views. Throw open the curtains in the morning and you’ll see nothing but rolling hills, patchwork countryside, and sky. Some rooms even have private terraces, perfect for soaking up the view with a morning coffee or an evening drink. Each room has it's own record player allowing you to indulge in some classical or rock during your stay.
Food is a real highlight at The Cottage in the Wood. In the 1919 Restaurant, the menu celebrates seasonal ingredients with flair and precision. During our visit, in the more informal brasserie, the catch of the day was beautifully cooked and served with courgette and samphire – a dish that perfectly reflected the freshness of the kitchen; we were warmly looked after by Olivia, whose charm and attentiveness made our arrival feel all the more special. Dining is enhanced by those sweeping valley views, which change with the light and weather but are always spectacular. The kitchen at The Cottage in the Wood is led by Head Chef Mark Potts, whose tasting menu at the 1919 Restaurant makes full use of seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Each course is carefully composed, balancing flavour, texture and presentation with real precision. Expect dishes that reflect the character of the region – from game and fresh fish to heritage vegetables – all showcasing the abundance of the Malverns and its surrounding countryside. Dining here feels like a celebration of place, with every plate as considered as the views from the restaurant. We especially loved the liquorice fudge at the end – so moreish we would have very happily taken home a whole bag. The Brasserie is open every day for breakfast and supper every day and lunch Wednesday to Sunday.
The hotel’s position means you can walk straight out onto the Malvern Hills, with trails for both leisurely strolls and more challenging hikes. The landscape is famously inspiring – Edward Elgar found much of his muse here – and you feel the same pull as you wander through woodland, ridge paths, and open fields. Just a short drive away, the market town of Ledbury is a delight, filled with independent shops, cafés and historic timber-framed buildings that make for a perfect day’s outing.
The Cottage in the Wood is a place where nature, food and comfort come together. Whether you’re here to walk, to eat, or simply to rest and take in the view, it captures the spirit of the Malverns beautifully. A great choice for a walking and foodie holiday.
