THE BEST HOTEL AND SPA IN THE NORTH OF ENGLAND

Seaham Hall and Spa on the coast in County Durham feels reassuringly familiar in the best way. Friendly. Relaxed. Easy to enjoy. The standout update is Harvey’s Bar. During the day it feels bright and open, a good-looking space for a post-spa drink. As evening arrives, the lighting softens and the mood turns more intimate, sultry and romantic. Cocktails are excellent, both with and without alcohol, and the atmosphere stays stylish without tipping into anything too bling.

There’s a confidence that runs through the team at Seaham Hall - warm, composed, and effortlessly consistent across the hotel, bar, restaurant, and spa. Service is attentive without being overbearing, and the fact that so many staff members have clearly been here for years adds a comforting sense of continuity especially if you're a returning guest.

Suite 04, the Hot Tub Suite, makes a bold first impression with its sheer size and scale. A butterfly headboard sets a whimsical tone against artfully chosen butterfly wallpaper, while the super king bed topped with a cloud-like stack of no less than six squishy down pillows, delivers the kind of sleep that is deep and full of dreams. I would go as far as saying it's one of the most comfortable hotel beds I've slept in! There’s a generous sitting room with a sofa that practically insists you sink in (note to self, I need to find out where it's from), plus a large bathroom with double basins, a roll-top bath, and a Victorian-style in bath shower. Step outside, and you’ll find a secluded terrace complete with ample seating, a fire pit and your own sheltered private hot tub, perfect for late-night soaks under the stars.

Turndown arrives with thoughtful precision and at the perfect time (ie, when you're not in the room!): a bottle of Temple Spa pillow spray, fresh water by the bed, towels refreshed, and the sense that someone has thought through every detail rather than going through the motions. The minibar is cheerfully stocked with crisps, biscuits, and soft drinks, though with the spa, restaurant, and Harvey’s Bar just steps away, it’s tempting to leave the suite behind.

The spa remains one of Seaham Hall’s most compelling reasons to visit. It’s serene, spacious, and exceptionally well-run. The treatment menu spans high-performance medical grade Noon facials to indulgent rituals from Ishga and Temple Spa. A 20-metre pool stretches beside a floor-to-ceiling glass wall, gazing out to a Zen-like garden beyond. Saunas and steam rooms are varied enough to keep things interesting, with Himalayan salt walls, plunge pools, hot tubs and the gym, fully kitted out with Technogym equipment, is one of the best you’ll find in a spa hotel. Post-treatment, mango sorbet in hand, guests drift between heated water beds and gently warming loungers looking onto the garden, all tucked away in hushed corners designed for deep relaxation.

In the restaurant, the aesthetic is rather Mediterranean: olive trees wrapped in fairy lights, walls adorned with golden leaves in mid-fall. The menu plays to the crowd with all dietary requirements considered, think XL prawns, perfectly cooked fish, and steak with velvet-smooth creamy mash, not forgetting the spring greens with anchovies. And yes, the Basque cheesecake is worth the hype, creamy, fluffy, and I convinced myself, very light!

Seaham Hall is a country house hotel that knows exactly who it is and who it's for. Harvey’s Bar brings a sexy and sultry vibe to evenings, whilst the overall experience remains comfortingly familiar and pampering. Seaham Hall Hotel is perfect for a single night of indulgence or a longer spa-centred weekend away, or even a midweek break. This is a spa hotel that hits the mark. It's not a 'wellness-led retreat', it is a brilliant luxury hotel with a stunning spa.
