A city hotel (once second home to an industrialist) that feels as though it’s on the cusp of the country – that’s the beauty of grade II-listed Jesmond Dene House. The house itself has history, charm and character in a great location - close enough, yet far enough from the heart of Newcastle. The design blends heritage and original features with a confident, classic modern touch. Rooms are individually styled rather than uniform, and many have recently been refurbished. We stayed in Room 2, on the ground floor, which had been recently refurbished. Once the library it has high ceilings with the original wooden panelled ceiling still in place. Think thick black-out curtains, a superking-size bed with a beautifully designed headboard, chairsand a mini bar complete with popcorn, hot chocolate, and Maltesers. The bathrooms are certainly not an afterthought; they're generous, with some featuring large walk-in showers and large bathtubs to soak in, and there are plenty of flannels, fluffy towels, and products from Urban Apothecary.
There's a cosy bar with an open fire, the perfect spot for a cocktail or two, and there's a lovely drawing room too, where the fire is lit in time for breakfast, should you want a more relaxed setting than the dining room.
Food at Jesmond Dene House is a highlight, and Fern is known as one of the best restaurants in Newcastle, with Gareth Rayner as the Executive Chef. His dishes focus on seasonal ingredients cooked with love and presented with care. His menus are well judged and full of flavour, served by a smiling, friendly team, and all dietary requirements can be accommodated. If you have a sweet tooth, you'll love the choice of puddings (almond and apple cake is delicious!) and the cheese plate. The wine list complements menus and suits a range of tastes. Breakfast is a buffet with a great choice of breads, pastries, fruits, hams and cheeses, in addition to an à la carte selection of cooked breakfasts.
Service is warm and personalised. Staff know the house well and deliver attention without being intrusive, they make you feel looked after rather than managed. The pace at Jesmond Dene House is relaxed, fitting the overall mood of a country house where you're invited to slow down.
Jesmond Dene itself is a draw. The parkland paths are perfect for a morning walk before breakfast or an easy wander after dinner. For those who want city energy, Newcastle’s shops, bars and theatres are a short drive or taxi ride away.
Jesmond Dene House suits couples on a weekend break, visitors to Newcastle who love good food, great service and spacious rooms, and anyone wanting a base that balances access to green space with the convenience of being close to the city centre. Boutique hotel lovers should add this one to their bucket list!
