What do you think makes a stay at The Priory Wareham unique?
A stay at The Priory is truly one-of-a-kind because it combines the romance of history with the charm of its riverside setting. Guests are welcomed into a former monastery dating back to the 16th century, yet nothing feels fussy or formal — it’s relaxed, intimate, and quietly luxurious. With just a handful of individually styled bedrooms, it feels more like a private home than a hotel. The setting on the banks of the River Frome makes it uniquely tranquil, with gardens that seem to melt into the water. Add to this The Garden Room restaurant, where modern British cooking is led by the rhythm of Dorset’s larder, and you have an experience rooted in place, season and soul. It’s this rare blend of heritage, natural beauty and heartfelt hospitality that makes The Priory so special.
Tell us more about the rooms and facilities at The Priory Wareham?
The Priory has 13 beautifully individual bedrooms in the Main House, plus 4 Boathouse suites located directly on the riverbank. Rooms are categorised in several types: Small Courtyard Double, Classic Double, Deluxe Double, Superior Double/Twin, Mini Suite, and Boathouse Suite. Each room is styled uniquely to retain/run through the hotel’s historic character.
Views vary: some rooms overlook the pretty inner courtyard; others have garden views, and many offer glimpses or views of the River Frome or the Purbeck Hills. The “Mini Suite” (The Purbeck) is a more spacious, elegant option: a super-king bed (or twin), a large bathroom with a separate shower and a feature roll-top copper bath.
Boathouse Suites give a more serene, waterside feel — waking to the sound of the river, being right by the water, with tranquil views.
All rooms are furnished to a high standard, combining antique pieces with elegant 20th-century touches, and each has its own character.
Amenities include: free WiFi throughout; luxury bathrobes; Molton Brown toiletries; smart TVs; Nespresso (or equivalent) coffee / tea making; fresh fruit; mineral water, and luscombe juices.
Guests also enjoy complimentary extras like paddleboards (for use on the river), beach robes (for post-swim or boat days), and a warm “goodbye coffee” at check out.
The hotel is a Grade II-listed country house next to the River Frome, with beautifully kept gardens, lawns, and a terrace that leads down to the river.
