Overview

The Spread Eagle hotel offers an unrivalled location in the heart of the South Oxfordshire countryside overlooking the historic market town of Thame.

The Georgian facade is instantly recognisable by all, drawn in by the un-missable 30-ft inn sign originally designed by Lytton Strachey’s Carrington which has welcomed all the property's guests for nearly a century. Spread Eagle's discerning customers' needs for a warm welcome, attentive but discreet service and excellent food and wine has not changed since the days of John Fothergill, the hotel’s pioneer innkeeper.

The property's rooms offer contemporary styling and sleek design set within traditional surroundings. From romantic Suites with creaky floorboards, to open plan suites with a mezzanine bedroom and a private garden, there are a wonderful variety of bedrooms to choose from.

The fantastic city of Oxford, with its dreamy spires and punting on the River Thames is within easy reach, along with the historic town of Aylesbury and for shopping addicts, Bicester Outlet Village is only minutes away.

History

The Spread Eagle has stood imposingly in the heart of historic Thame since the 16th century, famous for its farmer’s market and mile-long Main Street.

During its colourful history, the hotel has played host to Charles II, French prisoners from the Napoleonic wars, famous politicians and writers such as Evelyn Waugh.

Food & beverage

Enjoy a candlelit supper for two whilst watching the world go by or take time out to celebrate that special occasion with family, friends or colleagues.

Once made famous by John Fothergill, the eccentric Proprietor of the Spread Eagle in the 1920’s, the restaurant acknowledges its debt of gratitude to him for introducing haute cuisine to the provinces.  He chronicled his experiences in the widely read book ‘‘An Innkeepers Diary’’.

They applauded him then, the property salute him now!
