Inspirations

The Headland Hotel & Spa is part of the following Inspirations:

Britain's Best Coastal Hotels by Adrian Mourby

"Clark Gable, Prime Minister Ramsey Macdonald and the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) are just three of the celebrities who have stayed at Newquay’s remarkable Headland Hotel.

In 1951 Clark Gable was filming the Cold War romance Never Let Me Go, with Newquay and Mullion doubling as the Russian coastline while the teenage prince was convalescing here - some decades earlier - after contracting mumps while training at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. His brother Bertie (later King George VI) came to visit him at the Headland and they shared a suite of rooms on the first floor. The boys’ grandparents Edward VII and Queen Mary also came to stay. With that kind of guest list it’s not surprising the hotel, which opened in 1900, was built to impress. It’s even more impressive these days, as an extensive recent refurbishment draws to a close.

Don’t be surprised to hear German spoken in the lobby. The author Rosamunde Pilcher, who grew up in Cornwall and used to attend parties at The Headland, wrote about the hotel and adaptations of her books are particularly popular on German TV. Don’t be surprised to find dogs here either. The hotel is not just dog-friendly, but has even placed dogs statuary in the lobby to help visiting canines feel at home.

The Headland occupies a real headland just above Fistral Beach. This is a very popular place to swim in the summer but afterwards it’s good to be able to retreat up to the hotel and dine in quiet comfort in the Headland's Samphire Restaurant. Executive chef Christopher Archambault makes the most of local Cornish produce, as does the bar team. I can particularly recommend their Cornish martini made with Tarquin Gin from Wadebridge."

Top 10 English Seaside Hotels by Adrian Mourby

"Opened in 1900, the statuesque Headland Hotel rises up above the Atlantic Ocean the lair of some wealthy eccentric. Not surprisingly the Headland was “cast” as Hotel Excelsior in the film version of Roald Dahl’s The Witches (1990). Angelica Huston played the Grand High Witch – despite Roald Dahl’s objections - and Rowan Atkinson played the hotel manager. During a break in filming Atkinson left the bath taps running in his room and flooded the floor below. When hotel staff banged on his door the actor replied, “Go away, I’m asleep!”. Evidently the flood wrote off much of the production team’s electrical equipment.

The hotel had a similarly dramatic start in life. While it was being built in 1897, local fishermen attacked the foundations because they claimed the hotel was being built on common land where they had dried their nets for generations. This incident became known as the Newquay Riots. Fortunately when this imposing hotel was opened in 1900 it was able to attract the future Edward VII and Queen Alexandra to stay and earlier objections were set aside.

Situated on an actual headland west of Newquay the Headland stands four square on the South West Coastal Path which makes it great for walkers. It’s also just above Fistral Beach, which houses Rick Stein’s Fistral restaurant so it’s good for bathers and gourmands too."

Dog friendly accommodation this summer by Dinah Hatch

"For those with a dog with a maritime penchant, we suggest the simply lovely Headland Hotel and Spa in the lovely town of Newquay. Long morning walks or evening strolls along the beach or up on the headland make this serene spot perfect for canine lovers. And the hotel is more than geared up for you too. You will receive a welcome letter detailing everything you need to know about staying at the hotel with your dog, including information on the coastal paths. Expect lovely squidgy bedding, a chew stick, scoop bags and a bowl, for a small fee. You won’t want to leave this Cornish dog haven after one night listening to the waves as you and Fido drift off to sleep…"

Five of the Best Hotels for Surfing by Suzi Dixon

"You could argue that Newquay is England’s capital of surfing, with a thriving nightlife to complement the adrenalin-filled days on the beach. The Headland Hotel is a four-star surfers’ paradise, boasting a dedicated surf school. Surfing is Therapy is run by British Surfing Association certified coach and lifeguard Ben Ridding; through him, the hotel can arrange surf lessons and much more besides, such as coasteering, body boarding and even ‘Junior Baywatch’ for budding lifeguards."

Five of the Best Christmas Hotel Breaks by Kate Simon

"The Christmas lunch at this hotel by the seashore in Newquay may be traditional but its menu is a cut above, rolling out the (Cornish) turkey with cranberry and pancetta stuffing, venison and boar chipolatas and Kahlua gravy. Check in for the four-night “Christmas” break, from 23 December, and you can discover the curious tradition of Headland Horse-racing in the ballroom on Boxing Day."

Top Ten Pet Friendly Hotels by Ursula Hirschkorn

"Every doggy guest checking in to The Headland Hotel is greeted with a welcome letter explaining the hotel’s pet policies and encouraging them to get out and explore the miles of coastal paths around the hotel. They are also provided with soft bedding, a chew stick, scoop bags and a food bowl. Dogs are charged at £15 per night."

What a fantastic hotel, great staff, great food and amazing views. The view from our room was breathtaking, we ate at both restaurants during our stay and enjoyed both occasions, we were lucky enough to see an amazing sunset whilst dining in The Samphire Restaurant. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choices. We also used the gym and pool, both smaller that expected but well equipped

Well, I am truly blown away by this hotel, we arrived on Saturday the 4th may and were greeted by your very welcoming staff the lovely receptionist showed us around your hotel and then pointed us in the direction of our room. We had opted for an ocean view my wife had booked this hotel for my 40th as a surprise and I was not disappointed we stayed in room 308 it was lovely with the most stunning view of the ocean. Within 20mins there was a card given to me for my birthday from the hotel what a lovely touch ? dinner was probably the best dinner in a hotel I have ever had. Dido was very professional and looked after his service was excellent throughout. On Saturday we opted for high tea ! again service was outstanding everyone was so friendly food was delicious. We then sat outside on the very comfortable sofas for the rest of the afternoon soaking in the sun with a few drinks. After a beautiful walk along the coastline we weren’t overly hungry but decided to have a snack In the terrace restaurant the food again was outstanding and not overly pricey we had the seafood platter halloumi Fries and bread and hummus perfect !! Breakfast was just as good with everything you could possibly want. I don’t know who looked after us but he was really professional and friendly. This hotel is run to a very high standard but yet you don’t feel out of place there. It welcomes families and dogs. Nothing is to much trouble. Staying at your hotel made us realise we don’t always need to go abroad you have everything you need in the UK. We will definitely be back with our children and will highly recommend to friends we were completely overwhelmed with how lovely your hotel and staff are. Well done to a lovely team

Wow. What a gorgeous hotel!

Came for some tea and cake on a lovely bank holiday Saturday. Stunning view of Fistral Beach from the decking area. Great service from the bar and restaurant staff. The cakes we picked were stunning. Would love to stay over a night or two in the summer. Hoping to return. The Witches was a personal favourite film of mine as a child and seeing the hotel on the drive up was amazing. Looks stunning and grand from outside and inside it is beautiful, with a modern clean look and a stunning terrace for tea and amazing views

As a lone holidaymaker, I wanted to pamper myself. Two previous breaks at the Hotel
were great. This time I upgraded and was not disappointed. The room was spacious, well appointed and worth the extra.
The fine dining option was superb, and other dining options excellent. Cocktails a specialty (don't ask)

Lovely comfortable room - it was an "obstructed view" room so we could see the aqua centre being built in front but still had a view of the sea and the Huer's Hut. Coffee pod machine in room was nice touch and much appreciated, and the room and bathroom were spotless. The spa is one of the best I've been to. Breakfast was good and staff were friendly and efficient. It's also always nice when children are made to feel welcome - our little boy was allowed in the pool (at certain times: first thing in the morning and at around teatime) and the staff were all very sweet to him

Our Fistral suite was a stunning superb room with a stunning view over Fistral Beach. The bed was enormous and so comfortable. A separate lounge area and a huge bathroom.

After a tiring day we had dinner in our room which was first class and a brilliant breakfast before leaving. We will be back

I booked this hotel to extend our trip to Cornwall, It was completely randomly picked by me but of course, I later realised it was where witches were filmed - this caused great excitement for the kids.
I honestly cannot fault a single thing!
We arrived to a fun and charismatic porter (so sorry I forgot his name), then greeted by a wonderful reception team. Our room was stunning - very traditional with an obstructed sea view but SO much space for us the kids and our dog! The rooms are traditional but with all mod cons - the bathroom was amazing! We will be booking for next Easter. Thank you Headland team!

A First Class Hotel

Stayed in room 232, which comprised a large bedroom with a seperate seating area which was divided by folding doors. Large bathroom with bath and shower, and twin sinks. Views over the bay allowed us to watch the surfers from our bedroom.
The samphire restaurant was just excellent. The food was delicious and the presentation was superb.
The staff was very friendly and very helpful.
I found the hotel to be very well run. And our room was very quiet

Fantastic top class hotel, everything was amazing from the minute I walked through the door, the reception was very pleasant and the gentlemen at the doors were so so helpful, even dog sitting whilst I got my breakfast and setting me up in the stunning ballroom for breakfast. My suite was simply amazing, a real treat, we will definitely be back! Thank you everyone for a lovely stay!

Always wanted to try the hotel on the headland and I wasn’t disappointed, from the moment we checked in it was friendly and comfortable . Everthing was ready everything was explained and we were offered help to our room , I had booked an internal twin room so knew there would be no view but the room was lovely full of those little details that make it special even in one of the hotels cheapest rooms , we had lunch in the terrace bar and again the service was great ,then spent the evening in the bar catching up with family who live in Newquay , a well stocked bar not over priced and again great service .
This morning my friend +a spa therapist + spent the morning in the spa having a treatment and said it was an amazing spa the hotel should be very proud of it .
The staff are a credit to the hotel , and the hotel itself is a mixture of old and new ,little seating areas tucked away , big open areas to enjoy the views , it has everything.
We left happy and relaxed and will be going back as soon as we can.

We have just had a 2 night break at this lovely hotel, apart from a problem with the booking when we checked in, this turned out to be a probloem with Booking.com. We had a relaxing stay, the staff are all brillaint, the hotel is luxurious with lots of places to sit and relax. The views over Fistral beach are breathtaking. Our ocean view room was really special, with everything you could wish for.

Wonderful hotel, staff were great, excellent location and dog-friendly too. Just above Fistral beach, sea view, fresh air and surf's up for summer. We had a great time and would recommend a holiday there to anyone interested in beach holidays in England - we thoroughly enjoyed our stay (we were two adults, one child and two miniature dachshunds). Try it!

We have stayed at the Headland many, many times over the years and we visited again from Friday night to Sunday morning for my husband's 60th Birthday - as this is his most favourite place on the planet! Arriving at The Headland is like coming home and the excitement builds as we catch a first glimpse of this magnificent hotel. It is steeped in history and we have followed the changes and improvements over the years. The staff are exceptional - nothing is too much trouble! The food in Samphire Restaurant is exquisite and easily warrants the rosettes that the head chef has been awarded. The sun shone for our weekend and Fistral beach never disappoints - we love watching the surfers do their thing - and some of the moves are very entertaining. The Headland gives magnificent views over an awesome ocean and waves crashing on the rocks! The Headland really is our heaven on earth - and we can't wait to go back again - probably in November! Xxx

Everything superb, from the Vintage Afternoon Tea in the Fistral Suite, our Vow Renewal in the Morning Room, the overnight stay in a Fistral room, the girly spa day with lunch. All the staff we encountered were friendly but professional. Booked to go back next year for 3 nights for my 50th birthday in May, can't wait.

Fantastic hotel absolutely love it, the hotel is clean fresh and welcoming and the staff are all fantastic, we are always made to feel welcome and relaxed and with us coming here for the past 10 years we know most of the staff and they know us and they remember what we like and we don't need to ask. They're the best people you could come across anywhere and they always go out of their way to ensure our stay is perfect and they like to get to know their guests to improve their guests experience. There is nothing this hotel or the fantastic staff wouldn't go out their way to do for you. We have stopped in a lot of hotels and by far this is superior to all the others. We will be back every year every time we can make it ( thank you sooooo much to everyone at the headland your friendly personal service is second to none)
