Transformed into a boutique hotel from a former university building in medieval Trumpington Street, quirky Hotel du Vin Cambridge is true to the chain's ethos of underlining its properties individual characters and going with the flow of the cities they inhabit.
Thus the public rooms here feel a little like a professor's office, all leather chairs and muted, tasteful colours. The bistro is pleasingly relaxed and French, usually pretty busy with a mix of undergrad parents and locals enjoying the extensive wine list and watching their dinner being prepared in the open kitchen.
There is a variety of rooms and suites to suit all budgets but if you really want to go to town, book the cinema suite which features its own mini cinema with original vaulted ceiling, original fireplace and a private terrace on which to drink your morning coffee and peruse the papers.
