The 10 Best Hotels for Visiting Scottish Distilleries by Adrian Mourby

"Old Pulteney- Forss House Hotel: The Old Pulteney distillery in Wick is one of the most isolated and northern in Scotland. Since 1826 this rugged Highland landscape and Old Pulteney’s unique stills have combined to create a whisky that has been described as “bursting with the power and subtlety of the sea”. The whisky’s distinctive still-shaped bottle is screen-printed with a picture of traditional Wick herring drifter. These boats were used to ship in barley in the days when Wick was only accessible by sea. The Forss House Hotel at Bridge O’Forss near Thurso lies 26 miles further north of Old Pulteney almost level with John O’Groats on Scotland’s stunning north coast. This early nineteenth-century country house is hidden within 20 acres of woodland and decorated in a style that echoes its Victorian heyday under the Radclyffe family. Salmon fishing in the river that winds round Forss House Hotel has a long tradition. The largest fish ever caught here was a 42-pound cock salmon landed at the bottom of the garden. The hotel’s whisky bar hosts a carving of this fish. Here you can drink Orkney beer as well as making a start on the hotel’s collection of 300 malt whiskeys."

I was travelling to Caithness for work and couldn’t have asked for a nicer place to stay. The room I stayed in is in the annex building and is huge, with patio doors out to woodland from which I heard an owl twit-twooing during the night! The bathroom has a double shower and bath and the breakfast and dinners were exceptionally good. I have never tasted beef fillet that tastes so good! Free tea, coffee, got chocolate and shortbread in the room. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and the service exemplary. I look forward to returning here one day to stay at my leisure.

We received a voucher for a one night D,B&B stay as a Christmas present. We were greeted by the lovely Anne, who straight away upgraded us to a bigger room. The rooms are a breath of fresh air - after all the bland ‘neutral’ decor of the chains we’ve stayed in lately - cute flowery wallpaper & quality furniture that’s actually comfortable to sit in. We’d heard great things about the food here & we weren’t disappointed. Both us & the couple at the neighbouring table, agreed that it was one of the finest meals we’d had in many a long year. The chef is the master of delivering fine dining that is big on taste.

We stayed for a short break and were hugely impressed from the outset. The room was spotless and spacious with a full range of facilities. The bar was stocked with an impressive array of whiskies and the restaurant menu was well-chosen, with every dish prepared and served with care. The restaurant has a long history of AA rosettes which are very well-deserved. There was nothing pretentious about the decor or the staff. The watchword was comfort. The staff morale was high and they were determined to ensure we were well looked after at all times. It would be a pleasure to stay there again and I'm sure we will at some point.

The hotel is charming, quaint and highly recommend, the food they serve is simply put delicious and the young man that was serving was brilliant, very attentive and professional, rivals any restaurant in London. The bar was beautiful and I was told they have approx 215 scotches. The breakfast in the morning was delicious with plenty of options. I was only there one night and I wished I had booked more but I had a flight to catch in London. Thank you for the wonderful experience and I will be back.

It was our first time visiting Thurso and we couldn’t have been more pleased to stay at Forss House Hotel. We loved the area and the hotel’s surroundings. The room was gorgeous (I particularly loved the bath tub) and the room heats up nicely - great in the cold weather. The breakfast was great too. We only really met one member of staff and she was lovely and attentive. We would love stay here again.

Due to business demands, I've spent several months over the past few years so this review is broader than a single trip. The staff are more family than staff. The food is of the highest quality - especially when considering this small hotel is at the northern tip of the British Isles! I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Northern Scotland - you can drive from one side to the other in a couple of hours, so no need to stay anywhere else :-) The whiskey bar is an unexpected delight - as is the very knowledgeable lady who will chat with you and figure out which whiskey is most likely to suit!

Very comfortable garden room with patio doors looking out on the gardens. Spotlessly clean and warm. Staff were attentive and helpful, food fantastic. Situated with a waterfall and river in the grounds. Wished we had stayed longer.

We arrived after a long drive and were greeted by the wonderful Anne. She absolutely makes the hotel and couldn’t have been more courteous and helpful. We had a fabulous room with the most comfortable bed. Breakfast was first class and we were looked after by a lovely lady. One of the nicest hotels I’ve stayed in.

Lovely country hotel. We were in the River House which is not in the main hotel. Room was large, clean and comfortable, although couldn’t get tv to work. Would agree with some comments about minimal staff and maybe need a little more training, however everyone was friendly and helpful and not an issue. Annie is quite a character. The highlight was the food which was outstanding. We eat in a lot of top quality restaurants and this was right up there. Perfectly cooked and everything complemented what was on the plate. Outstanding collection of malt whiskies. Would definitely recommend.

This Hotel sets itself up as a stately country manor, and does quite a nice job of it. From the finely appointed country bedroom, to the welcoming lounge, bar and restaurant, to the classy tapestry on the wall of the stairway, to the deer antler chairs in the bar area, this hotel exudes an ambiance of class. We had dinner in the restaurant, and it was lovely, especially the signature scallops. Even the tartan carpeting on the ground floor and heading up the stairway, added to the country atmosphere. And there's even a scenic waterfall just a few score meters away from the hotel building. What more can you ask for?

We stopped at The Forss House Hotel for 1 night whilst completing the North Coast 500 road trip and it is an absolute gem of a hotel. The lovely lady that runs the hotel is called Anne and she was witty and poured enormous measures of whisky. The food is fine dining and was excellent and could not be faulted. The bedroom was large and spacious with a good clean en-suite bathroom with lovely walk-in shower. Car parking is superb and very safe.
