The 5 Red Star, 3 AA Rosette Bovey Castle, owned by the Eden Hotel Collection has recently received a £2 million restoration and refurbishment with the renovation of the entire ground floor completed in early 2015.
The transformation has included both restaurants, with our new executive dining restaurant, the Great Western, and Smith’s Brasserie serving classic British dining. All public areas have also received a makeover, a boutique shop has been added and the spa has been refurbished with a glamorous Art Deco feel.
History, glamour, excitement and adventure - Bovey Castle is truly a luxurious, 5 Red Star, award winning hotel set in beautiful countryside surroundings. A place where you can live out your dreams then put your feet up.
In the heart of Dartmoor National Park, the Castle overlooks the beautiful Edwardian gardens and meandering championship golf course set in the valley of the River Bovey.
Enjoy the luxuriously appointed décor, outstanding service and attention to detail.
Where else can you wear your Hunter wellies at 8am, golf spikes at 3pm and Manolo Blahniks for dinner? But while they offer guests luxury and indulgence, this is not a stuffy hotel where you can’t sit on the furniture or let your kids enjoy themselves.
The bedrooms have been designed with you in mind and offer comfort and luxury to meet your high standards. The leaded panes, lofted ceilings contrasted with modern day flat screen televisions with high speed wireless internet connections, games and movies.
Relax in the newly refurbished ESPA Spa or take a dip in the indoor pool with jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.
Bovey Castle’s Great Western Restaurant awarded 3 AA Rosettes
We are delighted that the Great Western Restaurant has been awarded three rosettes by the AA for its culinary excellence. Restaurants with the coveted three rosettes are deemed to be outstanding establishments that demand recognition well beyond their local area and just 10% of the AA’s restaurants achieve this level.
Imagine the best pubs in the land. You’ll be thinking countryside views, roaring fires, a welcoming atmosphere, cosy seating and delicious aromas drifting from the kitchens.
Got an image in your head? Well, Smith’s Brasserie is that, but better.
Relaxed and inviting, bang on trend yet unpretentious and most certainly classic British dining at its best. Smith’s is the kind of place where you can dress up and make it special with a glass of Champagne or dress it down and bring the kids for a family lunch after a day out on the resort. You can spend some ‘me time’ curled up with a good book and hot chocolate in front of the fire pit or some ‘we time’ catching up over cocktails.
They don’t stand on ceremony here and don’t want you to either so just chill out and prepare to do some serious relaxing in stylish surroundings.
The 3 AA Rosette, Great Western Restaurant is just a little bit special. They're not in the market for stuffy dining where you feel like you need to whisper behind your napkin. It is relaxed and comfortable, yet upscale and classy. It's known as ‘exclusive dining’, purely because it’s an experience you won’t find anywhere else in the South West.
The culinary roots are firmly planted in classical cookery, recalling the glamour of the restaurant’s Art Deco origins and echoes of a bygone era. They say the first bite is with the eye, so from the very start you are in for a treat as beautifully presented dishes, using locally sourced ingredients, are placed at your fingertips.
The ambience lends itself well to dapper tailoring and a fancy frock so feel free to glam up and feel special for an evening of splendid food and wine.
Christmas 2017 at Bovey Castle on Dartmoor National Park
Experience a Magical Christmas
There is no place like Bovey Castle to experience the magic of a 5 Red Star country house Christmas, with the hotel transformed into a festive hideaway for December.
Plump armchairs nestle against tables laden with walnuts and oranges, rooms are illuminated by spectacular Christmas trees and sparkling decorations.
Christmas on Dartmoor is really rather special. Long frosty walks across the national park will reward you with stunning views and visits from the wild ponies. You may want to venture to Exeter for the Christmas market or meet Father Christmas on the 'Santa by Steam' South Devon Railway.
Bovey Castle is the perfect base to explore Dartmoor National Park and Devon this Christmas!
Bovey Castle also has a Self Catering, Spa, Golf Course and Restaurant:
Bovey Castle is part of the following Inspirations:
"Bovey castle was built in 1907 by Frederick Smith, the son of newsagent W H Smith who has amassed a fortune from his retail chain selling books and newspapers on railway station platforms. This massive, modern Dartmoor castle was sold by the Smith family after the death of Frederick in 1928. In 1930 it became a hotel operated by Great Western Railways.
Since 2014 Bovey Castle has been part of Sir Peter Rigby’s Eden Collection. A great deal of money has been poured into refurbishment and into raising the culinary reputation of this resort. In 2017 Bovey Castle was awarded five Red Stars by the AA, its highest possible accolade. Moreover Bovey’s flagship restaurant, the Great Western, has been awarded three AA rosettes under chef Mark Budd.
There is a lot of change going on to the fabric of Bovey too. In 2018 the hotel will finish refurbishing 22 lodges in its extensive grounds The biggest development by far, however, is recreational. In recent years the hotel has offered country pursuits like falconry, cider-making and off-road driving, and in 2018 a new flight experience will be added. Visitors will be taken to nearby Newton Abbott to board a 737-800 jet simulator. Once strapped in, guests will be able to “fly” a specially prepared route over Dartmoor the Devon coast and Bovey Castle itself.
Now that's unusual."
"Bovey Castle keeps winning awards as a wonderful get-away-from-it-all hotel retreat. It was actually built by W H Smith (he of the High Street newsagents) in the middle of Dartmoor overlooking a perfect Devon valley that has since been turned into a golf course. From a distance Bovey looks like a Tudor palace or a very long Oxbridge College. The Smith family (later enobled as Viscounts of Hambledon) sold it in 1930 to Great Western Railway for use as a hotel and it has remained so ever since. Staying at Bovey Castle has overtones of spending the weekend at a rich uncle’s country house but its new bistro (named Smiths for reasons that don’t take too much working out) brings the hotel up to date.
Bovey castle also has an Elan Spa, which for once is not kept in the hotel basement but is up on the first floor behind mullioned windows. It’s all very stylish but what makes this spa experience different is its Gentleman’s Quarter, a large treatment room with monochrome pictures of Butch and Sundance and Steve McQueen on his motorbike rather than the ubiquitous sea shells and reclining Buddhas. There’s a dark leather treatment table and an old fashioned barber’s chair where men can enjoy wet shaves and beard trims. Anyone who feels his masculinity undermined by the very word “spa” will be much happier in the Gentleman’s Quarter, where you can close the door on all those fluffy white robes and soft downy slippers and make the January detox a truly manly experience."
"Now if you’re really serious about this romance lark than you should be considering the seriously soppy Bovey Castle in the rolling moorlands of Dartmoor National Park. Whether you’re into Hunter-ing up for heather-strewn walks amongst the gorse or sipping mojitos in your Manolos (and suede brogues please, gents), this divine country retreat does lovey-doveydum in spades (or should I say hearts?). The hotel is offering a Valentine’s break of a two-night stay with breakfast each morning, a bottle of Champagne and a red rose on arrival (delightfully old skool), a couples’ spa treatment, a six-course Valentine’s menu in the Great Western restaurant on one evening and dinner in Smith’s Brasserie the other night, all for £750."
"Set in woodland on dramatic Darmoor this luxurious retreat provides such a vast array of activities you will be lost for choice. From shooting, fly-fishing, deer stalking, gliding, quad biking, a Land Rover experience and even paint balling your stag sojourn can be as energetic as you want it to be. Stay in the hotel or in one of the luxurious lodges on the estate that offer full hotel facilities."
"Driving across Dartmoor is a spectacular sight in all seasons but particularly in the autumn. Take the B3212 north through Postbridge and Princetown and then, just after crossing the Rover Bovey pull up at Bovey Castle for the night. This mock Elizabethan mansion was built in the last years of the nineteenth century for the son of William Henry Smith, who made his fortune from the newsagents, WH Smith. As Viscount Hambleden, son Frederick wanted a country seat and that is what Bovey Castle became. It’s a glorious place to spend the night with a Jacobean-style staircase, oak-panelled dining room and an Adams-style drawing room. In the 1920s the Smith family would arrive here in a fleet of cars that would meet them from Moretonhampstead train station. After a good night’s rest continue north the next day to Castle Drogo, another stately home built by yet another a successful Victorian retailer. Julius Drewe founded the Home and Colonial Stores in 1883, made his fortune and retired when he was only 32. He employed the architect Edwin Lutyens to design this 1920s castle for him and his family. Though incomplete, Castle Drogo is a lovely place to stop for morning coffee."
"Turn up with cardigan clinging cherubs and leave with independent progenies. Bovey Rangers teaches children essential survival skills from building shelters to creating toasty camp fires and all whilst you’re relaxing in the spa with your other half, enjoying fine wine in the bar or cruising over Dartmoor in a hot air balloon. Alternatively make sporting history on their ‘crolf’ course. What do you mean what is it? The love child of golf and croquet, of course!"
