Top 10 Glamorous City Hotels by Dinah Hatch

"Sitting in one of the city’s dandiest and leafy Georgian squares equidistant from the city centre and chi chi Clifton (and near to Bristol Uni), the Berkeley is in an excellent spot. Step inside and the staid exterior gives way to a riot of colour with pop art, funky design and stripped wood creating a very cool vibe indeed. The downstairs members bar continues the hip feel of the hotel but staff are pleasingly old-school in their excellent service skills. We rather like the decanter of Bristol Cream Sherry in every room, left along with a bowl of fruit and a cafetiere. Eat in The Square and you’ll be surrounded by the city’s media and creatives. Come morning, the breakfast is ample, of high-standard and at only £12.50 rather good value."

The Best British Festivals this October by Adrian Mourby

"Bristol Festival of Literature

Bristol’s Festival of Literature is one of many UK arts events that run over the weekend 20-22 October. Launched in 2011, it deals with the business of writing rather than offering the opportunity to meet and worship famous authors. Writers, publishers, readers and editors come together in Bristol at venues like the South Bank Club to take part in masterclasses, showcases and discussions of how to get published. The organisers claim to love irrepressible creativity and dissenting voices of literature and call their festival ‘unputdownable’. Among the more public events is an evening devoted to “Unconventional Heroines” on Friday 20 October and a “Night of Crime” on 22 October.

To stay the night – or more than one night – try the Berkeley Suites ,which are based in a Georgian terraced house off Clifton’s elite Berkeley Square. They’re within walking distance - down vertiginous Park Street - of most of Bristol’s arts venues including Arnolfini, Watershed and Bristol Hippodrome. These five suites opened to the public in 2012 and offer a luxurious way to spend your literary weekend in Bristol."

We held our wedding at the sister venue, The Square Club, last weekend and we had the pleasure of staying in suite 4 for a few days either side of our big day.

The suites are in a separate townhouse on Berkeley Crescent which is beautifully renovated inside. It felt super secure with swipe cards for both the front door and suite doors also.

The suite itself was bright, light and spacious with a huge ceiling to floor mirror and a fab projector art installation. The kitchen/pantry is just ace - a PROPER coffee machine, with a kettle, microwave oven, hob, fridge and dishwasher also. Plenty of glassware, crockery and cutlery was provided to keep us going too.

Parking is on a first come first served basis at the secure Berkeley Square hotel car park which is a 3 minute walk away. Parking in Clifton can be a nightmare so it’s lovely to have this option available. Worst case scenario, the West End multi-storey car park is a 5 minute stroll away.

As a few reviews have mentioned, there’s no lift so those in the upper suites need to be fairly able bodied to get their luggage (and themselves) up & down the stairs. This shouldn’t be an issue for most though and at any rate, it’s all part of the experience of staying in a gorgeous, historic townhouse in this part of town.

Renata did a fab job of keeping the suite spotless and well-stocked. The decanter of sherry was a really lovely touch, as was being told that the mini bar was complimentary as we had booked directly with the hotel.

One criticism is that the shower over bath set-up could do with an extra glass screen - when using the larger rainfall shower head, it was impossible to avoid water puddling on the floor.

Our friends and family stayed in other suites that same weekend and feedback from them was consistently good also. A winner all round!

Nothing is too much trouble for the staff, they are all extremely helpfull. The Alice in Wonderland labels are a nice touch along with the complimentary fruit etc. There is leaf tea and ground coffee also provided as well as the usual sachets. Bed was very comfortable.

Fantastic, relaxing suite with all extras that I need or could wish for. Free fuits, coffee and with a "Complimentary sip of Sherry". I only stayed for 1 night and had little time to spend in the room. Still, loved it!

The room was fantastic for me and my bridal party. Stayed for 2 nights (1 before and of course, my wedding night) it was the perfect size to have hair at one end and make up the other. I would highly recommend staying in the suite to anyone who is getting married in The Square Club. The only down fall for me was another resident saying to my bridal party to be quiet when walking up the stairs. Bearing on mind it was 6am (I know not ideal for some) however they were carrying my wedding dress and bridesmaids dresses so was pretty obvious it wasn’t some people just coming home from a night out. Room service was excellent as the food was too... lots of complimentary drink, tea, coffee. High end bath and shower items! Couldn’t recommend it anymore then I have!
