10 Hotels for The Best Martinis This Christmas by Adrian Mourby

"Alexander House in Surrey dates back to Jacobean times with some harmonious Victorian additions, but its bar is decidedly modern with five padded lime green bar stools pulled up to a shiny wooden counter. Here I sat to talk to the barman, Milan Hegedus from Hungary. Milan admits to not being a martini drinker himself but he made me a fine variation on the standard dry martini. It used Tanqueray 10 with, once again, a drop of Lillet plus a splash of smooth single malt Scotch whisky. Of course it was stirred not shaken, and poured straight into a chilled martini glass. Milan likes to garnish with either a lemon or orange twist. His one variant is to use Little Bird, a new gin produced in South London that features grapefruit, sweet orange peel and Ivory Coast ginger amongst its ten botanicals. The addition of whisky was a pleasant surprise. It gave a warming quality to this martini, making it very welcome on a winter’s evening."

Top UK hotels to enjoy the Autumn Sun by Adrian Mourby

"With its luxurious spa pool resembling a sunken Ancient Greek temple you might be tempted to spend all your time indoors at Alexander House, but this rural hotel is also a significant sun trap. Its position, facing south over the Sussex countryside, means that the hotel gets sun most of the day. First thing in the morning it’s bright over the colonnaded main entrance. In the afternoon it shines on to the balconies of the new Cedar Lodge Suites, and it floods the spa garden and wedding gazebo as sunset approaches. Alexander House began life as a Jacobean manor house in 1608 and has been extended cleverly twice, first in the nineteenth century and then in 2006 by the Alexander Hotel Group. But the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who allegedly lived here briefly, would still recognise this rural retreat. He may even have written his poem “Sunset” about Alexander House: There now the sun had sunk, but lines of gold Hung on the ashen clouds, and on the points Of the far level grass and nodding flowers Setting aside the seasons, this is also a good hotel for fine dining. AG’s, under Executive Chef Darrel Wilde, is a 3 AA Rosette Restaurant and the 1608 champagne bar stocks 145 fine wines and 30 hand-picked Champagnes."

Review of Alexander House & Utopia Spa

Posted on by Janey WCustomer stayed Sep 2016

My husband and I booked a stay for one night at Alexander House Hotel to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. We arrived a bit earlier than the designated check in time (around 2pm) and we were pleased to hear that our room was already available. The staff on reception were efficient, friendly and polite.

We stayed in the Cedar Lodge Garden Deluxe Suite, as part of the "Celebration Break", which included champagne, spa treatments, private hot tub, dinner and breakfast. The size of the suite was impressive. There was a private balcony area which we were able to enjoy in the sun. The bathroom was excellent, with an oversized bathtub with two sinks and a separate shower.

During the afternoon of our stay, we had booked ourselves in for a couple's massage treatment, which was very good. I also had a facial which was genuinely the best I have experienced. The spa itself was excellent. Certainly felt luxurious, great range of products / treatments and the staff, again, seemed well trained and polite.

We had dinner at AG's, which was exceptional, followed by cocktails in the champagne bar. The barman seemed extremely knowledgable and made us up a great martini and old fashioned. Breakfast the next morning was served to our room (Full English with pastries etc; all delicious).

The only glitch we should mention was that our room was extremely hot at night. The radiator in the bathroom was on full blast (despite being a hot day) and we could not turn this down. Also , the air conditioning was not working and by that point it was too late in the night for someone to look into it (hence my review of 4, rather than 5, stars).

Notwithstanding the above, the hotel and spa are otherwise of 5 star quality. It comes at a price but the service is excellent, the surroundings are luxurious and the grounds are immaculate. Alexander House is perfect for a special occasion and we would love to return soon.
