If you are in the mood for a classic country house with all the topiary trimmings and gorgeous interiors, head off to the Cambridgeshire/Northants borders where stunning Elton Hall sits. There is a mixture of styles inside, ranging from 15th century to Victorian, with every room lavished with precious objects, antique furniture and delightful works of art. The 15th century tower and chapel in the garden are a reminder of the earliest days of this grand estate while the Marble Hall and main staircase, designed by Henry Ashton, are fabulous examples of a mid-Victorian revival of mid-18th century style. Don't miss the lovely Drawing Room which was fashioned from the medieval chapel in the mid 1700s and is now decorated with a pretty 18th century ceiling with enriched cornice and frieze. Outside, the gardens, laid out in 1913, feature a gothic orangery, lawns, the lily pond, a well-head and an arboretum.
