Surrounded by vast parkland and gardens, Delapré Abbey is an unusual historic building situated only 1 mile from the town of Northampton, and this is why it has been termed 'an urban country house and park'. It is a grade II* listed complex of buildings, making the Abbey an important heritage site for the town and county.
From its origins in the 12th century as a Cluniac nunnery, Delapré Abbey evolved over time to become a family home, then to be requisitioned by the war office, later becoming Northamptonshire Record Office, and finally to be opened into a visitor attraction very soon through the support of an HLF grant.
Visitors will be able to explore the twists and turns of this history, finding out about the early life as a medieval monastic house, all the way up until the present day with how the restoration work took place. Visitors are also encouraged to experience the gardens and park, including the walled garden, lawns, woodlands, and lake.
