Overview

Surrounded by vast parkland and gardens, Delapré Abbey is an unusual historic building situated only 1 mile from the town of Northampton, and this is why it has been termed 'an urban country house and park'. It is a grade II* listed complex of buildings, making the Abbey an important heritage site for the town and county. From its origins in the 12th century as a Cluniac nunnery, Delapré Abbey evolved over time to become a family home, then to be requisitioned by the war office, later becoming Northamptonshire Record Office, and finally to be opened into a visitor attraction very soon through the support of an HLF grant. Visitors will be able to explore the twists and turns of this history, finding out about the early life as a medieval monastic house, all the way up until the present day with how the restoration work took place. Visitors are also encouraged to experience the gardens and park, including the walled garden, lawns, woodlands, and lake.

Reviews

I visited with friends whilst the repairs were being carried out, so we went around the gardens and I was pushed around in my wheelchair by a friend. It was wonderful to see the different trees and shrubs scattered around the grounds. I look forward to revisiting.

Its fantastic to see the restoration of the Abbey! It will be a massive positive for the parkland and for the town. It is such a historic property and of great importance to the town, seeing it transformed is amazing

What a wonderful place hidden in the middle of Northampton. Great for walking the dog off the lead and heads down to a lovely lake to have a picnic or go to the superb cafe.

Visited the Conservatory Cafe for the first time today - lovely ambience, tasty food and really friendly staff!
