Irvine begins with one of five par fours over 400 yards followed by short par fours at four and five which require accuracy on a course where gorse and heather line the fairways. Another long par four follows and then there is another short par four. 'Braid' a 373-yard par four opens the back nine, before the longest hole on the course, 465-yard 'Grandstand' named after the remains of the old grandstand on the Bogside Racecourse is next to the dogleg. Views of the Isle of Arran dominate the 12th, one of eight par fours on the back nine. The only par three is the 16th and it's a good 'un with a cross-bunker that means the tee shot has to carry and there's a good finish with a tricky green at the next and lots of sand on the last.
