Experience the excitement of the Clovelly Gig Regatta, where Devon and Cornwall’s top gig rowing teams compete in a thrilling day of racing. Pilot gigs, originally designed for the competitive world of 18th- and 19th-century pilotage, are fast, seaworthy boats built for speed and endurance. Crews race at up to 9 knots through North Devon’s tidal waters, showcasing the skill and power that make gig rowing so exhilarating. Clovelly Herring Festival always falls in November, so it’s the time of year when our historic village celebrates the coming of the great “Silver Darlings”, better known as Herring. We celebrate and promote this tasty, nutritious fish whilst supporting sustainable fishing. Herring, an oily fish, whether fresh or smoked, is an excellent source of some great health benefits, such as low mercury and high protein content. Herring contains many key nutrients, such as Omega-3 fatty acids (apparently giving good effects on brain, eyes, heart and muscle function) and other nutritional benefits with so many vitamins, including Selenium, etc. The Maritime historian and writer, Mike Smylie, attends with his “Kipperland” exhibition, which is devoted to the history of all things herring. Mike also turns the herring into delicate-tasting kippers and bloaters in his smokehouse for sale. On the quay, there will be a variety of delicious herring specialities along with natural fibre, local food and craft stalls. Throughout the day there will be live music, free kids face-painting, and children’s activities. Celebrate the festive season with the enchanting tradition of our RNLI’s Christmas Lights switch on. The village comes alive with holiday spirit as a local brass band leads a joyful procession down to the harbour, accompanied by the singing of festive carols. At the harbour and Lifeboat Station, you’ll find delicious treats, and Christmas grog, along with other refreshments to keep you warm and merry. Keep an eye out for a special visit from Father Christmas himself. The festivities continue with a heartwarming carol service, after which the village and harbour are illuminated in a breathtaking display of Christmas lights—a truly unforgettable sight! For a perfect end to the evening, enjoy a bite to eat or a cosy drink at the Snug or at the New Inn. All proceeds go to support the lifesaving work of Clovelly RNLI. Boxing Day Barbecue should make the perfect follow-up to Christmas day for all your family and friends. With FREE entrance to Clovelly village all day, take a walk along the estate or explore the village in the morning. Then come on down to the quay to enjoy a lunch barbecue starting at midday with live music running from 1pm to 3 pm. The Red Lion serves some great mulled cider and delicious, hot chocolate drinks. There will be a Land Rover available to take you back up if you do not wish to walk.

Liz’s courses are designed to open your eyes to how the commonest of wild plants can be transformed into the most exciting, nutritious and sustainable of foods. All start at 10am and include a foraged three course lunch. The day ends at 4pm and you will have something to take home with you that you have made that day.

Join Ed Drewitt, our naturalist, who will take you on a fascinating hunt for varieties of bats, deer, badgers, foxes, voles, mice, hedgehogs and wild boar. Tickets are £60 each and include a charcuterie board & glass of wine before or after the safari. Please ote that start time and end times will vary throughout the year.

This is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in nature and to create memories through words, sketches and doodles whilst your small group is expertly guided. If you haven’t yet come across it, nature journaling is the practice of journaling whilst you immerse yourself in nature. It is a practice which really encourages you to slow down and be more mindful about what you see, hear and experience rather than grabbing a phone or camera. These walks are from 10am for two to two and a half hours. You will then return to the hotel for a three course Sunday Lunch. We recommend you bring a folding chair or stool.

Join star storyteller Jim Bell for a unique outdoor experience, exploring the universe through the beautifully dark night skies of the Forest of Dean. From our hilltop vantage point in the grounds of Tudor Farmhouse, you’ll observe stars, constellations and planets, and discover the fascinating science and stories behind them. Your guide Jim has more than ten years of experience as a presenter for Explorer Dome, helping people of all ages to experience the true awe and wonder of the universe. Of course, with the magic of the night sky comes the risk of cloud cover spoiling the view – happily, Jim also brings with him his own portable planetarium, so you can be sure that you will see the stars whatever the weather! You will be provided with a pair of binoculars for observing, but please also bring warm layers and boots or robust walking shoes. The experience lasts approximately two hours and starts at between 6.30pm and 8pm depending on the time of year.

On our autumn forages you will be accompanied by fungi experts, Eric, Kerry or Marlow. Meeting at 9.30am you will start with a short talk on foraging with tea and coffee before departing at 10am for a walk from the hotel. Rain or Shine Theatre presents The Pickwick Papers Follow the adventures of Samuel Pickwick and his three companions as they travel through South East England getting into mischief and embarrassing scrapes! This Dickens tale is a hilarious and light-hearted story which will be a great start to the open air theatre performances at Clovelly Court Gardens. Hotbuckle Productions presents The Return of the Native, adapted from the novel by Thomas Hardy This story is set on desolate Edgon Health in Wessex, and follows the marriage between Clym Yeobright and Eustacia Vye. Eustacia’s desire to escape Egdon Health results in tragedy after a romance between her and her former lover is reignited. This performance will take place on the terraces by Clovelly Court Gardens, with the stunning backdrop of Bideford Bay and the Clovelly Estate. Bring a picnic and something to sit on! Who are Hotbuckle Productions? “Back in 2006, HotBuckle was formed by Adrian Preater and Gemma Aston, and since then, they haven’t looked back! The started of with the original production of Adrian’s “Get Writing with Rosie” which was an educated play about creative writing. They also toured with a number of other original works, Namely Joshua and Ballad of a Bird. Adrian started adapting novels – beginning with Great Expectations. Since then Adrian and his team have toured all over the UK with lots of amazing actors and actresses. ​HotBuckle has gone from strength to strength and after moving from their home in Surrey to a Shropshire base in 2013, they have continued to tour and create quality theatre.”

The Pantaloons present The (Almost) Complete History of Britain This satirical show hilariously condenses British history, highlighting quirky figures and absurdities in a silly summary of key historical events such as Norman conquests and the Spanish Armada! This performance will take place on the terraces by Clovelly Court Gardens, with the stunning backdrop of Bideford Bay and the Clovelly Estate. Bring a picnic and something to sit on! Who are The Pantaloons? “The Pantaloons draw from a wide variety of popular theatre traditions, from commedia dell’arte and pantomime to stand-up comedy and silent movies, to bring what we consider to be a vital sense of “play” back to classical performance. We aim to recapture an aspect of Shakespeare’s drama which the modern naturalistic theatre has lost: the riotous energy of the clown. Hamlet tells us that the clowns in Shakespeare’s day spoke “more than is set down for them”, and we have found that tapping into this rich vein of anarchic humour can have a strangely moving and uplifting effect. Crucially, it also reminds us that we are all simply participants in a game of make-believe. In our theatre, your imagination is just as important as ours. We ask you to become co-creators of the play-world with us; or as Shakespeare put it in the prologue to Henry V, to “piece out our imperfections with your thoughts.””

David Mynne presents Widdershins by Carl Grose Welcome to Widdershins: a long-forgotten village buried deep in a dark, wild corner of Cornwall. Here, Bob Droll (local raconteur, folklore enthusiast and village-hall caretaker) will take you on a tour of a place where mystery lurks about every corner. You won’t believe the shocking tales of poor “Pity Me” Jose; or of Cryer Bledstone, the Sea Captain afraid of death! And then there’s the ghost of Treacle Straight bus stop… But beware. The deeper Bob leads you into his forest of far-fetched fables, the more lost you might get. After the King of Britain dies leaving no heir, great knights fight for power as the mysterious sword in the stone appears. Two of our Plant Societies, Fern and Carnivorous, are joining us at RHS Garden Wisley for displays of tender, garden and aquatic ferns and fascinating carnivorous plants from the UK and around the world. There is also the opportunity to purchase a range of unusual plants from specialist nurseries. Talks on growing both ferns and carnivorous plants as well as help and advice.
