Britain's Finest in conversation with Applegarth House

What do you think makes a stay at Applegarth House unique?

FINALIST FOR BEST GUEST HOUSE/BED AND BREAKFAST FOR SOUTH OF SCOTLAND

THISTLE AWARDS 2025

“There are B&Bs and B&Bs, Andrew and Kirsteen have created an exquisite experience …everything is perfect.  The Rooms are worthy of any 5* hotel and better equipped than most” ~ Philip & Peta,York.

Applegarth House is not a Hotel. It is a home from home where guests are greeted as friends.  Afternoon Tea served with homemade cake and scones is served on arrival. Dinner is offered and guests are invited to join Andrew and Kirsteen for pre-dinner drinks.  Dinner can be a jolly affair when other guests staying (there are 2 rooms) when the Michells host everyone in their dining room.  Otherwise, it is an intimate candlelit meal in the bay window of their elegant drawing room.  Meals are offered the first night but not necessarily every night

If guests would like to stay more than 3 nights - they are invited to consider the 1 bedroom cottages in the newly converted Byre and Stable.  These are self-catering but an evening meal can be arranged.

Tell us more about the rooms and facilities at Applegarth House?

Originally the Manse (vicarge) to Applegarth Church which is right nextdoor, Applegarth was built in 1727.  It is an elegant country house furnished beautifully with antiques and paintings throughout.  A sweeping staircase flooded with light from a skylight above sweeps past one landing where there are 2 single rooms and a loo.  The Staircase has shallow steps and landings so not too challenging for guests with mobility problems.

Further up are 2 double rooms each named after local rivers and 2 single rooms

  • Annan is the larger and is a very spacious room with a super king bed. It faces the garden to the South and also overlooks the Annandale valley to the West.
  • Dryfe, a little smaller with a King size bed overlooks the Annandale Valley.  Both are elegantly furnished and each have an en-suite bathroom with a drenching rain shower over the bath.
  • Kinnel and Moffat are single rooms on the half way landing with a loo and basin nextdoor is ideal for children
  • There is another Shower Room on the landing with a walk-in shower for those with mobility problems.
  • Beds are made up with crisp white Egyptian Cotton sheets and thick white fluffy towels are provided on the warm towel rails. Each has 32' televisions and there is a tray left with a variety of teas and coffee with biscuits and fresh milk

The staircase is shallow with landings. A large shower room with walk in shower is available for those struggling with the bath.

We really enjoyed our two-night stay at Applegarth House. Quiet, calm and civilised comfort are found in this lovely old house, set in lush, picturesque countryside. Kirsteen and Andrew are welcoming hosts and look after their guests with genuine warmth and gentle enthusiasm. Even their two quiet, friendly dogs contribute to the general ambience. Tea on arrival, taken in the beautiful sun-dappled garden, included a light-as-a-feather Victoria sponge and warm scones. A great start that set the standard for the rest of our stay. Excellent, all round! Susan, MarlboroughMay 2025

On arrival, on our motorbike, we received a warm welcome from our hosts Andrew and Kirsteen. After a quick freshen up we enjoyed afternoon tea in the garden! Freshly made cake and gluten free options for me. We were then invited for pre dinner drinks in the beautiful garden watching the sunset. Dinner was excellent, with my coeliac condition taken into account. The house and gardens are superb, the peace and tranquility ensure a pleasant environment for an overnight stay. Andrew and Kirsteen made this a very enjoyable stopover!

Brilliant overnight stay driving back home to Edinburgh from England. Welcoming hosts made me feel completely at home with tea in the sunny garden on arrival. Drinks on the decking overlooking the surrounding fields and hills as the sun went down was followed by a delicious dinner en famille. The leisurely route planned after the best Scottish breakfast took me through the Forest of Ae... glorious scenery. This will definitely become a regular stopover or even a relaxing break from the capital

A wonderful B and B discovery! We stayed en route to and from Aberdeen. The welcome so warm and friendly, superb hospitality with evening meal and enjoyable conversation with our hosts Andrew and Kirsteen. We stayed extra night to explore the area, and this b and b should persuade one to explore the region of historic houses, attractive coastline and scenery. We can’t rate this highly enough! Applegarth House is a regular stop off on the way north. We are always delighted to catch up with Kirsteen and Andrew who have become good friends and who give us the most wonderful welcome. The bed is very comfortable, the food and wine is delicious and the whole experience is something we always look forward to after the trials and tribulations of the motorway! An oasis of calm just minutes from the M74. Andrew and Kirsteen have created a most comfortable home from home. A beautiful old rectory, the room was better than many 5-star rooms with every detail carefully thought out and equipped. As we were the only guests they joined us for our beautifully prepared dinner. A lovely fun filled stay! Not many better launching points to explore bonnie Scotland.

Marvellous marvellous marvellous! Another glorious overnighter with Kirsteen and Andrew at Applegarth House. Luxurious accommodation, wonderful food, fabulous company (and the perfect location if you're driving the M74 and want a jolly nice break). We shall be back again! Alison, Strathcarron Apr 2024
