Overview

Allerdale House is a generously proportioned boutique guest house situated in Keswick in the north of the English Lake District. It offers 5 ensuite kingsize and super kingsize rooms, 3 with baths, in a spacious Victorian building on a quiet corner plot 5 minutes walk from town.

What makes a stay at Allerdale House unique?

The house is entirely separate from the owner's accommodation and functions more like a small hotel; so you won't bump into the owners on the stairs! Each room has been individually designed, decorated and furnished, much of it by the owners themselves, and has a quirky sense of style throughout. Customer service is personable, friendly and helpful; the owners are from Keswick and have a wealth of knowledge of the local area and the attractions it offers.

Tell us more about the rooms and facilities at Allerdale House?

Allerdale House has two super king four-poster rooms with ensuite bathrooms, baths and seating areas. One Kingsized room also has a sofa, and a large bathroom with a shower and bath, and the further two standard bedrooms both have kingsized beds and ensuite shower rooms. All rooms enjoy a generous hospitality tray with Nespresso machines and a range of pods, Paddy and Scott's coffee bags, Cumbrian tea bags and a range of Clipper herbal and fruit teas. Fresh milk for tea trays is available daily in the dining room mini fridge. A private car park for guests is available to the side and rear of the building.

Can you suggest any activities or things to do while staying in the Keswick area?

Keswick is both a bustling little Lakeland town with a huge range of eateries and drinking spots and also the centre of the Northern Lake District. Numerous walking opportunities lie within walking distance of the front door; the Lake is a ten-minute walk and the town five. Over 30 food and drink establishments serve the town and visitors extremely well, alongside a theatre, two-screen cinema, brewery, several museums, and multiple live music venues.

Where can guests enjoy food and drink?

Breakfast is a varied and filling affair - guests can choose from all the standard Cumbrian breakfast items including local butcher-made sausages and dry-cured bacon, and free-range eggs direct from the farm in Embleton, 10 miles up the road. Vegans and Vegetarians are catered for with homemade Glamorgan sausages and Vegan Haggis, and a range of homemade cakes are on offer all day, every day. Coffee and loose-leaf tea come from the UK's oldest coffee roasters - Farrer's in Kendal - and coffee is freshly ground every morning. Alternatives are available in the form of omlettes, pancakes, breakfast sandwiches, and Scottish smoked salmon. All dietary specialisms are happily catered for. A wide range of options are also on offer in town and the surrounding area - from budget pub meals to Michelin starred restaurants.

First off, I had been in touch with Matt for the longest time due to lockdowns. Nuf said. Aside from the experience of the Lake district, Keswick especially, being one of the most picturesque places we've ever had the pleasure to have visited, our stay at the Allerdale house was exemplary. Our hosts Leigh and Mat are quintessential in both welcoming hospitality and passion for the Lake Region. Leigh's family is replete with regional history, and she is bountiful with tales of local lore and recommendations for daily excursions. Her assistance was dead on in direction, explanation, and expectation. Great hosts!! Breakfast was a Cumbrian delight. Everything was locally sourced and made to our daily suggestion. I understand that Matt was the Culinaire directore, but I'm sure Leigh's baking expertise was along for the ride (she's a fantastic baker). Our room #6 at the top of the stairs (our choice), was more than comfortable. The shower and washroom were more than ample in size and offered the usual amenities. It is a short walk to the main part of town and to the lake itself. It is located on a very quiet street and very restful. Mat gave me extremely helpful restaurant/pub recommendations, many of which we chose to use. He was spot on. Also, take advantage to the discount codes they offer for the lake boating and theatre. We saw an incredible interpretation of "Brief Encounter" at the Theatre on the Lake. They were a fantastic traveling group. A wonderful theatre and evening. I cannot say enough about the comfort and pleasure the Allerdale House afforded us on our 3 weeks stay in the UK. Rest assured; we will be staying there on our next visit. They have made Keswick and the Allerdale House our only stay-cation venue in the Lake District. Great Job Ligh and Matt

There’s not a great deal more that I can say about the Allerdale Guest House, that hasn’t already been said. Leigh and Mat are fantastic hosts, who made our stay very special. The house is very tastefully decorated throughout, to a very high standard and is exceptionally clean. Leigh had a great depth of knowledge, not just of the local area but also the surrounding Lake areas and she was always on hand to offer information, maps and places of interest to visit. The breakfasts were excellent and could be ‘tailor made’ to suit a wide spectrum of tastes. We found that the breakfasts set us up for the rest of the day. I can highly recommend the Allerdale Guest House to anyone wishing to visit the Lake District and it will always be our first choice to stay. Thank you very much Leigh/Mat for making our stay a very memorable one…. Jean is still gutted for spilling the cereals all over the floor!

A fabulous place in a quiet area but within a 5 minute walk of Keswick centre with ample shops bars and restaurants. Mat and Leigh were perfect hosts, friendly and helpful without being intrusive and always available to answer any queries we had. Room 6 was fabulous with a super king 4 post bed, coffee machine and beautiful furnishings. Best of all fresh milk always available along with home baked goodies every afternoon. Breakfast was to die for, well cooked with endless options to a full english if required. Perfect

A spacious room decorated with care and flair, a delicious breakfast, and hosts with lots of tips to share. Mat and Leigh put their hearts into it and it shows. They gave us a free upgrade and our room was gorgeous and creative. And comfortable. Haggis was available for breakfast on request! And Leigh gave us personally annotated local maps and lots of tips to go with them. I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could; just above and beyond

Just returned home after a fantastic few days at the Allerdale Guest House. Mat and Leigh are the most wonderful hosts who couldn't have done more to make our stay so special - from great breakfasts to incredibly helpful and informative advice on what to do and where to go in the local area. The room was lovely and spotlessly clean, and the location of the Guest House is perfect - quiet but only 5 minutes from town
