Immerse yourself in Arthurian Legend at Tintagel Castle

Discover the rich history, myths and legends that surrounds Tintagel, a castle inexplicitly linked to King Authur. The 13th century castle ruins that sits at the top of the hundred or so steps that lead up the cliff-face is a sight to behold, especially when you consider its site's connections with Arthur (he is said to have been conceived here) and Merlin (legend says his cave was on the beach below – access is free here). Up on the summit, kids can sit and complete their activity sheets handed to them by staff at the entrance while adults inhale the bracing Cornish air and admire the spectacular summit views.

Historical attractions for kids and adults alike by Dinah Hatch

"OK, I’ve stretched the history concept right off the bat here as North Cornwall’s Tintagel Castle is more about myth and legend than hard facts. But who can resist a turn around these majestic 13th century castle ruins, perched high on the cliff face at the top of a hundred or so steps. King Arthur is said to have been conceived within these magical walls while legend dictates that mysterious Merlin lived in the cave at the foot of the cliff. Spectacular views across to Lundy Island from the ancient walls make the climb to the top well worth it – I suggest you take some tales of the knights and dragons of Arthurian legend and regale the kids with them as the Cornish breeze cools your aching feet."

Cornwall's Top Ten Family Attractions by Dinah Hatch

"Spread majestically across the hills of the North Cornwall coast, my kids adored clambering up the winding stairway to this magical ancient ruin and haring around between the “rooms” (while I sat and stared at the frankly amazing views). On the way down, I told them about King Arthur, reputedly born here, and we popped into nearby Merlin’s Cave before lunching at the gorgeous beach café. Just wonderful."
