Durham Cathedral has iconic status throughout the north-east of England, and deserves its reputation as being amongst the finest examples of Norman architecture remaining in Europe. Though a historic attraction, the Cathedral continues to hold regular services, but very rarely is visitor access unavailable. Entry is free though donations are welcome in order to keep the wonderful interior of Durham Cathedral open to the public. There are many aspects of this Cathedral that hold historical importance and public interest, the Shrine of St Cuthbert and the traditions of St Benedict being two examples, and the Cathedral's unique appearance has inspired many artists, being visible for miles around.
