Overview

Sitting broodily on a rocky islet in St Aubin's Bay, 16th century Elizabeth Castle defended Jersey for more than 400 years. Wait for low tide and walk along the causeway to inspect this mighty historic edifice or jump on the amphibious castle ferry (great fun). The castle tells the tale of Jersey's history and you can climb the battlements (which date back to the time when Sir Walter Raleigh was governor of Jersey), explore the grounds which provided safe refuge for King Charles II during the English civil war and examine the bunkers which were re-fortified during the German Occupation in World War II. You can also see the hermitage that is supposed to have been home to St Helier and see what life was like for the hundreds of soldiers who were once garrisoned at the castle. Don't forget to check the website for regular Living History demonstrations.
