In the picturesque little North Yorkshire village of Sandsend, grand Georgian Estbek House on the Whitby coastline is what they call a gem of a find. It’s a sandal’s throw from the beach, its small friendly staff will talk at length about what’s on the menu and in the cellar and your surroundings (soaring cliffs, river with ducks out front) make it hard to leave – especially in summer when you can enjoy a sip or two of something cold on the terrace. Shuttered bedrooms are cosy and colourful but the real splendour is in the panelled dining rooms where fresh produce from surrounding sea and moorland are served daily. The restaurant policy of only serving fresh wild fish means you can expect some mouth-watering seafood on the menu to boot.

Local directions:	From Whitby - Follow the sign posts for Sandsend (A174), carry on into Sandsend, as the road turns left the Hart inn is facing you, Estbek is the next property, parking is in the Mulgrave estate car park, directly over the bridge. From Teesside - Drive along the A174, through Lyth, and down into Sandsend, across the first bridge, around the headland and before the second bridge you will see Estbek across the Beck, turn right before the bridge into the Mulgrave Estate Carpark.
