The Lavender House is located in a picturesque thatched house in the heart of the Norfolk Broads. Low ceilings and dark wood beams together with the glittering glassware, crisp linen tablecloths and soft lighting create a warm and intimate atmosphere in the dining room. Richard Hughes, the chef patron, has a philosophy of sourcing seasonal local ingredients to create his 'modern Norfolk' cuisine. Local cheeses, together with meat and fish from local farms and suppliers are evident in the menu. A starter of Great Ellingham goat’s cheese fritters, Binham Blue paste, Wells Alpine and a pickled pear may be followed by a saddle of local venison with chestnut gnocchi and bitter chocolate. Wines are well chosen, and the tasting menu has some original touches, such as a Beerenauslese paired with a Snickers bar and iced peanut butter parfait.
