Hove Museum & Art Gallery, housed in an impressive Victorian villa, re-opened in 2003 following major re-development works. The new galleries allow visitors to learn more about the permanent collections on display of craft, toy, film and fine art. One of the highlights is the Craft Collection of work by contemporary craftmakers and ceramics. The Museum also houses the National Toy Museum and Institute of Play Collection, which includes dolls houses, dolls and clockwork toys. The film gallery contains the Barnes Collection, a display which documents the history of the moving image.
Hove Museum & Art Gallery is part of the following Editors' Picks:
"Some kids might be a bit reluctant to enter a museum – but this one houses the National Toy Museum, a different prospect altogether. The Wizard’s Attic display (the idea being all the toys are there to be repaired by a clever wizard) is total toy heaven, with dolls, teddies, mini trains, tricycles and rocking horses dating back to the 1700s delightfully arranged. Well-known for its child-friendly approach (with lovely sunny grounds for lunching in), the museum also has great film gallery. Look out for regular hands-on events and activities."
