National Maritime Museum Cornwall

If you have ever pondered how to stay alive for weeks on end marooned at sea (answer: drink turtle blood) or what lighthouse keepers do when they are not alerting ships to imminent danger, take a trip to the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth, Cornwall. This wonderful quayside attraction, set across 15 galleries on five floors, easily eats up the best part of a rainy day. Clamber up the tower for panoramic views across the estuary, harbour and docks, learn how to steer a boat, climb into a life raft, explore a 70feet Sea King helicopter, learn about the extraordinary Robertson family’s survival story and see their vessel the Edna Mair… the list is endless! The museum also runs regular storytelling workshops for children in which they handle genuine pirate treasure and learn more about the science of the sea. Even the gift shop is lovely, with loads of relevant kids’ toys and local crafts besides. Oh, and entrance for the rest of the year is free once you have paid once to get in. Brilliant.
