Wood Hall Hotel & Spa is part of the following Travel Ideas:
"Wood Hall is three miles outside Wetherby and 16 miles east of York. This grand, early Victorian, bay-windowed hotel is set in 100 acres of woodland, at the end of a long private drive. Having been a family home, a boys’ prep school, and Catholic ecumenical centre it opened as a hotel in 1988 and was extended in 1992. From Wood Hall it’s an enjoyable 30-minute direct walk across country - or an indirect 14 minutes’ drive - to Hillcroft Farm Riding Stables. Yvonne Lowther set up this stables here in the village of Sicklinghall, drawing on her knowledge of the pastureland and quiet lanes of the charming landscape between Wetherby and Harrogate. Here she is offers rides lasting from an hour to all day. This year Wetherby will be much in our minds as part of Herriot country. In October Britain will be celebrating 100 years of its favourite vet, James Herriot and the tales he wrote that turned rural Yorkshire into Herriott Country."
"There’s an irony about the lovely Autumnal views you get from the front of Wood Hall down to the woods below. It’s actually thanks to Oliver Cromwell’s troops that the hall is up here because during the English Civil War they destroyed the original manor house which stood down below on the banks of the River Wharfe. So complete was the destruction in fact that all the stonework was thrown into the river and the original carved coat of arms of the de Wodenhalle family was only fished out this century.(It can now be seen in the hotel entrance). Fast forward a hundred years and in 1750 a new Wood Hall was being designed for the wealthy Scott family whose architect, John Carr of Yorkshire, was keen that their new neoclassical building should be up here on the heights overlooking the Wharfe Valley. Completed around 1790, Wood Hall has been a place of peace and relaxation ever since. The presence of a Carmelite monastery in the grounds only adds to the tranquillity."
"Wood Hall was built in the eighteenth century as a retreat for the Vavasour family who were Catholic courtiers in the time of Elizabeth I. Their line came to an end in 1826 when the last baronet died without children. The hall then became a school and a Carmelite monastery was built in the grounds. Now Wood Hall is a hotel and very keen to get its guests out enjoying this tranquil spot. They even provide walking leaflets in the lobby. The 40-minute Riverside Walk takes the picturesque River Wharfe while the Limekiln Woods Walk runs as far at the nearby village of Sicklinghall, which has an ideal pub for lunch. The hotel’s concierge knows these routes very well and often sets walkers a challenge. If they can find what he describes while out walking they’ll get a sweet from him on their return."
