Masham, Ripon, North Yorkshire, HG4 4JH
Swinton Park is an exclusive 31 bedroom luxury castle hotel in the Yorkshire Dales, with fine dining, cookery school, spa and extensive grounds. Set on the 20,000 acre Swinton Estate, a stay at Swinton Park can be as relaxing or adventurous as you wish, with a range of Parkland walks and spa pampering, through to country pursuits and activities such as clay pigeon shooting, fishing, pony trekking and golf.
There is a sense throughout the castle of it being more of a lavish home than a hotel, with individually designed bedrooms, each with generously sized bathrooms and exceptional views.
The emphasis in the restaurant menu is on seasonal and local produce inspired by the fruit, vegetables and herbs grown in the hotel’s four acre walled garden (the largest hotel kitchen garden in the UK), and the menus change accordingly.
Swinton Park also has a Spa, Wedding Venue and Restaurant:
Swinton Park is part of the following Travel Ideas:
"Swinton Park was built in 1695 for the Sir Abstrupus Danby. We do not get enough people going by names like that these days. In 1767 it was almost entirely rebuilt by his descendant William Danby, who favoured a castellated historical style. In 1813 a gracious Regency library was installed.
Today Swinton Park is a 30-bedroom hotel with landscaped grounds, five artificial lakes and 100 fallow deer abutting the gorgeous Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is still owned by the Earls of Swinton, although it was converted into a country house hotel in 2001.
Swinton Park has also featured in a number of TV series including BBC1’s The Syndicate which was Kay Mellor’s story of betting syndicates. Each series followed a different syndicate. The third, with Lenny Henry, chronicled the lives of a lottery-winning staff syndicate at a fictional North Yorkshire stately home. That building, crumbling Hazelwood Manor was “played” by Bramham Park near Wetherby in the series but Swinton featured as one of the other stately homes.
These days Swinton is referred to locally as “our Downton Abbey ” proving that TV and the movies really do rule our lives."
"Neo-Gothic Swinton Park is still owned by Cunliffe-Lister family who are the Earls of Swinton although it was converted into a country house hotel in 2001. The hotel’s Cookery School is located on the ground floor of a converted Georgian stable wing on the estate. Light and airy throughout and decorated with Fired Earth tiles, the school has a demonstration kitchen with appliances by Gaggenau, equipment from Kenwood and knives by Wusthof. There is also an Aga and views over the castle turret and parkland. In this tranquil environment cookery students attend practical, hands-on courses covering a range of themes and techniques from Dishes for Entertaining to Wild About Food foraging courses and the Chef’s Table Demonstration Dining Experiences. There are half-day, full-day and two day courses, both residential and non-residential course and a different levels of sophistication from children’s cookery lessons to fine dining. Students also get to use the four-acre walled garden behind the hotel, which is planted with fruit, vegetables and herbs – and cut flowers during the summer months. £160 pp full day"
"The footmen and maids might have long gone but the sense of old school splendour is still in full majestic flow at Swinton Park. Ancestral seat of the Cunliffe-Lister family, the castle provides the ultimate outlet for your Downton passions. Like Highclere, it's an impressive and imposing facade: a medieval-like fortress, spiked with turrets romantically clad with ivy and surrounded by swathes of parkland in the North Yorkshire landscape that reach from the River Ure right up to the moorland dales. Take advantage of the estate and enjoy fishing, falconry, riding and shooting; or if you prefer a more genteel pace take afternoon tea and a turn around the extensive gardens before returning to your sleeping quarters, which, as you would expect, are fit for a king."
"Set within 200 acres of parkland this luxury castle hotel has sweeping views a tranquil lake, deer park and the extensive surrounding estate. With a rich history it offers a unique stately home experience and is a great destination for nature lovers. The hotel offers a range of activities including fishing, falconry, shooting and horse-riding, which takes place at the local Trekking Centre. As well as relaxed hacks, experienced riders can try out the estate’s fantastic cross-country course. After a tiring day’s riding, why not recuperate in the hotel’s spa before indulging in their acclaimed restaurant."
"What can be more romantic than being swept away to the Yorkshire Dales to stay in a luxury castle run by the Baron of Masham and his wife. Wander in 200 acres of parkland with its walled garden and lakes to a designated sheltered spot to find hot mulled wine and mince pies set up for you or take to the Dales for a gourmet picnic in a secluded bothy hut on the estate. Enjoy a 6-course gourmet dinner complete with accompanying wines. If you’re a real foodie you can join the Chef’s table, and watch your dinner being cooked in front of you."
