Castle Howard

Castle Howard is a magnificent 18th century house, built for Charles Howard the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, whose descendants still live there. There is an 80ft painted and gilded dome and impressive collections of porcelain, sculpture and antique furniture. The collection of paintings are dominated by portraits of Henry III and the Duke of Norfolk both by Holbein. The gardens, which cover 1000 acres, include the Temple of the Four Winds, the Mausoleum and many rare trees and shrubs.
