Michelham Priory House & Gardens

Upper Dicker, Hailsham, East Sussex, BN27 3QS

Step back in time at Michelham Priory.
Most famous for the fact that it is the home of England’s longest water-filled moat dating back to 1229, Michelham Priory in Hailsham was founded by Augustinian canons and has experienced a rocky history by way of the dissolution of the monasteries. These days, it’s a lot calmer and makes for a lovely peaceful day out in the Sussex countryside. Inside the house you’ll discover the history of this beautiful Tudor manor from medieval times up until its WW2 story (there are some lovely furniture, tapestries and artefacts). There are hands-on trails and activities for kids plus dressing up boxes to really help you envisage this historic spot’s past. Outside, lovely grounds, a working watermill, forge, Elizabethan barn, replica Iron Age roundhouses and a playground mean there’s plenty to keep children amused. A kitchen garden, cloister garden and physic garden provide interest for horticulturalists. Special weekend activities including learning archery.

Michelham Priory House & Gardens also has a Garden:
