With a lineage stretching back to the 1400s, it’s not surprising that a walk around Althelhampton House in Dorset is a living history lesson. Its Great Hall is its centrepiece, built in 1485 as the main accommodation for the house’s inhabitants and adorned through the ages with stunning furniture, paintings and decoration as it became more domesticated. Now it is a lovely example of Tudor architecture and has some truly lovely heraldic stained glass and a beautiful fireplace. From there, sidle off into the Elizabethan West Wing which has a bathroom we would kill for, complete with shiny copper bath, the lavish Yellow Bedroom and State Bedroom and a sumptuous dining room. If its fine, the vast grounds outside are a dream too, with topiary pyramids, gushing fountains and the scenic River Piddle plus a dovecote to house 1200 birds.
