Spencer House

Spencer House, London´s finest surviving 18th century town house, was built in 1756-66 for the 1st Earl Spencer, an ancestor of Diana, Princess of Wales, (1961-97). It was designed by John Vardy and James `Athenian´ Stuart and houses a fine collection of furniture and paintings, including five major Benjamin West paintings graciously lent by Her Majesty The Queen. The Palm Room has a screen of gilded palm trees and fronds while the Painted Room reflects the 18th century passion for classical Greece and Rome. Photographs © Spencer House Limited
