Also known by the rather grand address of Number 1, London, Apsley House is an art lover’s paradise. The house, the ancestral home of the Dukes of Wellington since 1815, is stuffed to the gills with masterpieces, among them some of the finest canvases from the Spanish Royal Collection, captured by the 1st Duke of Wellington in 1813. We’re talking amazing masterpieces here by Italian Old Masters such as Correggio and Giulio Romano and works by Spanish Golden Age painters such as Velázquez (look out for The Waterseller of Seville) and Murillo. Goya’s fabulously grand Equestrian Portrait of the 1st Duke of Wellington seems to sum up the pomp and mightiness of this powerful family. This stately city mansion also captures the Napoleonic period beautifully, revealing the family’s love of 17th century Dutch paintings. The series of French and British portraits of the first Duke of Wellington’s contemporaries provides a historic snapshot too along with the depictions of battle scenes in which he took part. The house also holds an outstanding collection of silver, porcelain and sculpture.
