A traditional and inland course with a mix of heathland and parkland, Northamptonshire now has has 21 holes. The original 18 holes were designed by Harry Colt and later James Braid altered the pattern and arrangement of many bunkers and the 18th green was relocated. A further three holes were opened in 2004 and now provide a nine hole loop conveniently returning to the clubhouse. The opening hole is one of its toughest at 454 yards but the 438 yard fifth which is played uphill and a fairway sloping right to left with a blind second shot is also memorable as is the short 15th with the river along the right.
