Southerndown Golf Club

Southerndown, a combination of links, downland and heathland perched high overlooking Porthcawl, the Bristol Channel and a beautiful Welsh landscape, is invariably open to winds of varying strengths. Rolling tree-less slopes, yielding soft velvet-like turf without water hazards, but offering bracken, gorse, unforgiving bunkers and grazing sheep that keep down the rough as natural hazards. The par fives are short enough to provide good scoring for some others are tough and demanding on a wild day. The opening uphill par four and the closing downhill hole with the fairway to the right of a sharp incline are features. So is the first of four par threes, the fifth, 'Carter's Folly', where an accurate iron is essential to avoid wicked bunkers.
