Blackheath, instituted in 1608, is the oldest club in the world and the museum with club trophies dating from 1789 and historic items of great interest are well worth the visit alone. Visiting the club is an experience. The opening 472-yard hole is perhaps the toughest on the 6,219-yard par 70 course occupied by plenty of bunkers. A nostalgic step back in time, the clubhouse is perhaps more inspiring than the modest parkland course squeezed into a small area. The 397-yard 17th is possibly the best hole. The greens have improved greatly and an occasional tree appears in the target area. It is really a wonderful place for traditionalists who love the game’s history and is reminiscent of a gentleman’s club.
