Ferndown Golf Club
Ferndown is an attractive, classic heathland course that winds its way through the pines and rhododendrons on a soft turf that provides easy walking. Harold Hilton, British Open Champion in 1892 and 1897, drew up plans in 1912 for a course that opened two years later. Peter Alliss learned to play from his father, Percy, the club professional for 25 years. The old course, now supplemented by the nine-hole President’s course, measures just 6,500 yards. Some of the well designed and steep-lipped bunkers are especially tough while a number of holes are dog-legs making the tee-shot crucial if the many trees are to be avoided.
