Houghton Hall Walled Garden

Houghton, King's Lynn, Norfolk, PE31 6UE

Houghton Hall’s glorious walled garden makes for a classic British day out. Wander through the rambling parkland that surrounds the hall, planted at the start of the 18th century and dotted with ancient oaks and sweet chestnut trees. Some 600 white fallow deer plus other species such as the Pere David and Sambar graze on the land. The gorgeous award-winning five acre walled garden was created out of the old kitchen garden by the present hall owner Lord Cholmondeley in 1991 as a memorial to his grandmother, Lady Sybil Cholmondeley and is an absolute delight to explore. There are several ornamental gardens which include a lovely double-sided herbaceous border, an Italian garden, a glasshouse, a fruit and vegetable garden and a rose parterre. Think statues, fountains, a rustic temple and interest throughout the year. Don’t miss the stunning contemporary sculptures dotted around the park – with works by James Turrell, Richard Long, Stephen Cox, Zhan Wang, Anya Gallacio and Jeppe Hein and Phillip King. New for 2017 a special Exhibition by British Sculptor, Richard Long.
