As you drive through the gates of the Observatory Science Centre near Hailsham in Sussex, the copper clad domes housing giant telescopes stand strangely at odds with the rural surroundings and there’s little to give away the fun inside. But once you’ve entered and pottered around the excellent little gift shop full of science-based toys, there are dozens of mini experiments to try which will appeal to every age. Compete with your family to see who has the best reaction times to sound and light, learn how earthquakes work, and play the interactive constellations game. As well as this, there are regular talks on the giant space telescopes and when the weather’s nice the outside play area, again based around physics and simply brilliant, is gorgeous to sit in and enjoy a picnic. Oh, and check out the coffee shop (with super cakes) where you sit at benches once occupied by scientists and astronomers. An ingenious, under-publicised attraction that appeals to every generation.
The Observatory Science Centre is part of the following Editors' Picks:
The Ten Best Places for the Kids in East Sussex by Dinah Hatch
"This hive of activity sets out to explain all the basic scientific concepts without switching kids off so you’ll find heaps of hand-on (and feet-on) interactive displays, an outdoor park full of things like sound dishes and water areas for experimentation plus indoor exhibitions that blow the cobwebs off traditional science teaching and breathe new life into physics."
